Mallory Kell Commits to Rebuilding University of Iowa for 2023

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Continuing its rebuild after saving the program last season, the University of Iowa has added a commitment from Mallory Kell for its freshman class of 2023. Kell is an in-state commitment, hailing from Urbandale, Iowa where she swims for the DSMY Marlins and Waukee Northwest High School. Kell will graduate high school in the spring of 2023.

I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue swimming and studying at the University of Iowa! I would like to give the biggest thank you to my DSMY and Waukee coaches and teammates, as well as my friends and family for their constant support. Another huge thank you to the coaching staff at Iowa for giving me this opportunity. I can’t wait to be a Hawkeye! Go Hawks!

Kell is an Iowa Girl’s State Swimming and Diving Championships gold medalist from last spring. At the 2021 IGHSAU Swimming and Diving Championships, she finished in third in both the 200 IM (2:05.54) and 100 fly (56.89). Her state title came in the 400 free relay where she was joined by Nora Kemp, Taylor Judas, and Jessi Wigham in claiming first. The team finished with a time of 3:28.09. All four members of the team will return next season, giving the team a serious chance at winning the title again. As a team, Waukee Northwest won the Iowa state title last season.

Over the summer, Kell was an A-finalist in nearly all of her events at the Iowa Long Course Championships. Her highest finish was in the 400 IM, where she snagged third in a time of 5:11.42. She also took 8th in the 100 fly (1:05.62), 5th in the 200 fly (2:30.28), and 4th in the 200 IM (2:24.51).

Top SCY Times

  • 50 free – 24.56
  • 100 free – 52.74
  • 200 free – 1:57.44
  • 500 free – 5:19.54
  • 100 back – 58.94
  • 200 back – 2:09.83
  • 100 fly – 56.51
  • 200 fly – 2:04.53
  • 200 IM – 2:05.54
  • 400 IM – 4:24.97

A versatile swimmer, Kell will likely narrow down her lineup to the fly and IM events at the college level. Iowa’s team looks completely different this season, with just one freshman joining the team and many of the program’s top swimmers from last season transferring out. So far this season, Georgia Clark has been among the program’s top performers in the fly and IM events. She leads the team in both the 400 IM (4:34.92) and 200 fly (2:16.28).

Iowa is currently in the rebuilding process after its roster dropped to just 12 women this season. Kell will be a part of the freshman class of 2023 that is already slated to include fellow Iowa resident and Iowa High School State Champion, Olivia Swalley.
