Marathon Michigan Schedule Includes Water Carnival Part 2; Hosting Big Ten Men’s Meet

University of Michigan head men’s and women’s coach Mike Bottom doesn’t shy away from much in terms of scheduling, and he’s got a huge list of meets for his teams to attend in the 2013-2014 season.

The one that really stands out, though, comes right at the beginning. On Friday, September 27th, they will officially open their season by hosting Iowa in a co-ed dual, and then the very next day will be the 2nd Annual Michigan Water Carnival, where the Wolverines will host Iowa and Oakland University in an afternoon of swimming, music, aquatic antics, and the world’s greatest friendly celebration of aquatics.

See last year’s highlight reel below:

That’s only the beginning, though. The defending champions Michigan men will go to Notre Dame for the Dennis Stark Relays and a tri against Auburn and Notre Dame on October 11th and 12th; then they’ll head back across the state line to Bloomington for a tri with Indiana and Texas. That’s four of the top ten men’s teams in the country from last season squaring off in two weeks, plus the defending Big East Champions of Notre Dame.

The women will also be in on the Texas-Indiana tri, though instead of Notre Dame, they’ll head to Minneapolis for a two-day dual with the Minnesota Golden Gophers: the two-time defending conference champions.

The women squeeze in a quick meet just across the Ohio border with Toledo before both teams go to the Purdue Invitational from November 14th-16th: their third meet in Indiana in the fall semester alone. A week later, the Wolverines host the University of Michigan Open, and then another 10 days after that will send at least a partial squad to the U.S. Winter Short Course National Championships.

For the first time in the Mike Bottom era, which is in its second year, the newly-combined programs will take a co-ed training trip to the Florida Keys, where Bottom used to coach at the Race Club. Both sets of swimmers will compete at the Orange Bowl Classic on January 2nd, with the divers going to Ft. Lauderdale for the Mike Pepe Invitational the next day.

The spring semester will begin with road trips to Purdue (another Indiana meet) and then around the bend of Lake Michigan to Northwestern on January 10th and 11th for both teams.

They will then finally get some good home racing in with a January 17th tri meet against Eastern Michigan and Oakland. Note that the Michigan men will send a select roster to the all-star SMU Invitatiaonal in Dallas that day instead.

Then both teams travel for their annual rivalry show-down with Ohio State, with the women’s also facing the Nebraska women at that meet, on February 1st, and the regular season schedule wrapping up on February 7th (women) and 8th (men) against Michigan State.

Then the men’s championship season will include will hosting the genius First Chance Meet on February 22nd and 23rd, then the Wolverines will defend their Big Ten title at home, in the Canham Natatorium, from February 26th-March 1st. Anybody who needs it will go to the Ohio state Last Chance Meet, before divers head to Zone C in Iowa City and then everyone onward to the men’s NCAA Championships in Austin from March 27th-29th, where the men are also the defending champions.

The women’s championship schedule starts at Big Ten’s from February 19th-22nd at Minnesota, the same Ohio State Last Chance Meet, the same Zone C Diving Championships, and then back to Minneapolis for the 3rd time of the season for NCAA’s. The Michigan women were 36th at NCAA’s last year and 6th (of 12) at last year’s Big Ten Championships.

The teams’ full schedules are below.

I’m pretty sure there is no Purdue invite this year.

What are the events for this year’s aquatic carnival?

Any other teams doing carnival events / meets this year too?

Is a fun trend coming to life?

Usually only the B or C squads go to the Nov Purdue Invitational. Really rigorous schedule none the less but at least they don’t have to travel for the Big 10 champs. It’ll be interesting to see if the extensive schedule for the men will put some wear on them and hurt their freshness at NCAA’s.

I’m ready for a Michigan beat down at NCAA’s. I’m no hater, but no more Mr. nice guy either. I’d like to see several other Big 10 teams/individuals put the pressure on and challenge them to soften them up before the PAC 12 gets their mitts on them at NCAAs!

Michigan is the obvious favorite in the Big 10 but their are a… Read more »
