Women’s 400 IM

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu started off her campaign of nine events, but winning the women’s 400 IM in a time of 4:34.14. Hosszu sits atop of the world rankings having swum a 4:29.89 at the Golden Tour in March. This was her seventh fastest time of the 2015-16 season.

Jordis Steinegger of Austria was second recording a time of 4:49.50 followed by Lisa Pou of France who hit the wall in a time of 5:01.68.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Marco Koch won the men’s 200 breaststroke with ease taking the event in a time of 2:09.45. Koch, who has the world’s top ranked time of 2:07.69, finished over two seconds ahead of South African Jarred Crous who finished in a time of 2:11.67.

Feilian Mao of China finished third in a time of 2:12.91.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Canadian Kierra Smith won the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:08.94. She finished just ahead of Jinq-En Phee who set a new Malaysian record hitting the wall in a time of 1:09.18. Phee broke the record of 1:09.82 set by Siow Yi Ting in 2009.

Spaniard Marina Garcia finished third in a time of 1:09.47.

Men’s 100 Freestyle

Russian Andrey Grechin took the men’s 100 freestyle in a time of 49.03. The race for second was a close one between Steffen Deibler of Germany of and Clement Mignon of France. Deibler touched in a time of 49.15 followed by Mignon who hit the wall in a time of 49.17.

Paul Biedermann of Germany finished just outside of the medals posting a time of 49.55.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

Charlotte Bonnet of France led the women’s 200 freestyle from start to finish winning the event in a time of 1:56.75. Bonnet’s time was just off her season’s best of 1:56.32, which currently ranks 11th in the world.

Although Bonnet was out front for the entire event her largest lead over Katinka Hosszu was 25 one-hundredths of a second.

  • Bonnet – 27.53/56.84/1:27.23/1:56.75
  • Hosszu – 27.61/57.09/1:27.38/1:56.83

Hosszu finished second in a time of 1:56.83. Natthanan Junkrajang of Thailand finished third in a time of 2:01.28.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

South African Chad le Clos took the men’s 200 butterfly in a tight race with Hungarian Tamas Kenderesi. le Clos won the event in a time of 1:54.80 followed by Kenderesi who touched in a time of 1:55.11. The time was a season’s best for le Clos, who had posted a 1:55.04 in April.

That improvement was still not enough to move the South African up from fifth in the world rankings as Kenderesi sits in the fourth place position having posted a 1:54.79 in May.

Russian Evegeny Koptelov finished third in a time of 1:57.88.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Svetlana Chimrova of Russian took the women’s 100 butterfly in a time of 58.33. She was followed by Hungarian Lilianna Szilagyi who posted a 58.80 and Marie Wattel of France who finished in a time of 58.87.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

German Jan Philip Glania won the men’s 100 backstroke in a time of 54.07. Glania, who missed the finals at the 2015 World Championships, beat World Championship silver medalist Camille Lacourt of France who hit the wall in a time of 54.78. Both men were well off their season’s bests.

Glania has been a 53.61 while Lacourt has been a 52.97.

Australian Ben Treffers finished third in a time of 55.40.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

Katinka Hosszu took her second event of the evening winning the women’s 200 backstroke in a time of 2:09.58. Hosszu’s time is well off her season’s best of 2:07.01 which sits fourth in the world rankings. Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe finished second in a time of 2:10.97 while Egio Osk Gustafsdottir of Iceland finished third in a time of 2:13.80.

Men’s 200 IM

German Philip Heintz won the men’s 200 IM in a time of 2:00.56. He was followed by Jeremy Desplanches of Switzerland who hit the wall in a time of 2:01.73 and Marcin Cieslak of Poland who finished in a time of 2:02.73.

In the pool? 13th FINA Wold Championships, Rome, Italy, 4th day, 29/07/2009. Or 28th. I should remember because as if they had occured yesterday.

Myles Brown (RSA) won the Men’s 400 Free in 3:49.96.

Yes, that was the first event today in the afternoon, the, so called fast prelim. The slow one was in the morning. Here’s the collected result:

The guys were mostly unshaved, Grechin didn’t wear a swimming cap, with medium-length hair, bearded etc.
Katinka’s 400IM started at 17:07 (CET), 200free at 17:36, 200back at 18:02. Between the finals there was the victory ceremony of the previous event.
