Maria Sheridan Verbals To Duke, Stays In State

The Duke Blue Devils have added another women swimmer to their verbal commits from the 2014 class. Out of the Charlotte, North Carolina area, Maria Sheridan, who swims at SwimMAC, will head north east into Durham next fall.

We came to know Sheridan’s name when herself and three other teammates from SwimMAC broke the 17-18 200m FR-R National Age Group Record this summer at the North Carolina Senior Long Course Championships. She was second on that relay, splitting 26.86.

She’s also an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke.

Sheridan’s best times are stronger in the long course disciplines. Focusing on the backstroke, butterfly and freestyle strokes, her bests times long course are 1:04.6/2:17.5 BK, 1:01.8/2:19.0 FL, 27.1/58.36 FR. Short course, she is very strong in the 100 backstroke and butterfly, but a little weaker in the freestyle. She’s been 56.99/2:03.28 BK, 55.33/2:02.62 FL, and 24.0/52.3/1:51.5 FR.

She’s just outside scoring at the ACC level, sitting right on the line of the top16 to 24 at the meet. Easily with a year of development at the college level, she can make an immediate impact in the ACCs.

Sheridan is a great racer, which is evident in her relay swims. While swimming for her high school, Charlotte Catholic and the 3A State Championships, she split 23.4 on the anchor leg of their 200 medley for the win. She also swam as the butterfly leg on the 200 medley later in the meet that also won. Individually, she finished 2nd in the both the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Her team Charlotte Catholic went on to win the State title, and will look to repeat their efforts again this winter.

Duke is having a solid recruiting season this fall. They already have verbal commitments from Catie Miller (BR/IM), Leah Goldman (IM/all), Elizabeth Devitt (Distance FR) and Verity Abel (IM).
