Marie Wattel set a new French National Record in the semi-finals of the women’s 50 fly on day six in Gwangju, producing a time of 25.56.
The swim breaks the previous mark of 25.63, set by Melanie Henique at the 2017 World Championships and then equalled by her at the Golden Tour in Marseille last year.
This is Wattel’s first individual National Record. Her previous best time was 25.90 from the French Championships this past April.
The 22-year-old won a pair of gold medals last summer at the European Championships in the women’s and mixed 400 free relays, and also owns a pair of medals from the 2017 SC Euros in Copenhagen.
She becomes the 18th fastest performer in the history of the event and moves on to tomorrow’s World Championship final with the third seed.
The world record-holder and two-time defending champion Sarah Sjostrom qualified first overall in 24.79, and 2017 silver medalist Ranomi Kromowidjojo sits second in 25.54.
