BUFFALO, New York – Marist women’s swimming and diving defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins 189-111 on Friday morning in its season opener. The win was also the squad’s first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the year. Marist is now 1-0 overall on the year, and 1-0 in conference play.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Perhaps the greatest highlight of the meet was Grace Reeves earning first place in the 3-meter dive. She scored 220.64, which was her best performance of her career in the event. This was also her first career first place victory.
- Esabelle Gervasio continued her impressive performance at the end of last season, into the new year. After winning Diver of the Meet at the ECAC and MAAC Championships, she came into Friday’s meet and dominated the 1-meter dive, with a score of 244.20.
- In the first individual event of the day, the Marist women absolutely dominated. Sidney Judson finished atop the rankings in the 1000-yard free with a time of 10:40.59. Heather Hartmann and Kimberly Chan finished right behind her in second and third place.
- It was a dominant day all around for Judson, totaling 22 points in the meet. She finished in first place in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:12.76. She also finished in second place in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:58.16.
- It was a big day for the Marist freshman. Three different freshmen finished victorious in different events. Danielle Cianciotto won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.30, Molly Hewett won the 200-yard back with a time of 2:09.28, and Leigh-Anne Zanella won the 200-yard fly with a time of 2:13.79.
- In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Juliet Nowak, Georgeanne Zimmerman, Emma Butzler, and Zanella finished in second place with a time of 1:50.92.

HIGHLIGHTS
- The most impressive highlight of the meet on the men’s side came in the 200-yard IM. Jackson Klarsfeld dominated the event, finishing in first place with a time of 1:53.95. This time is not only a personal best, but it shatters the record he set back in the 2018 MAAC championships by seven seconds.
- In the first individual event of the day, the Marist men absolutely dominated. In the 1,000-yard free, Michael O’Donovan finished in first place with a time of 10:01.53. Right behind him was Brendan Rice in second place, and Charles Scheel in third place.
- Captain Raislan Aiken had a sold day in Buffalo, leading the divers. He placed in first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 248.48. He also placed in second in the 1-meter dive, with a score of 239.47.
- Ahmed Sallam burst onto the scene in his first action as a Red Fox. The member of the Egyptian Junior National Swimming Team finished in first place in the 50-yard free and the 100-yard free, with times of 21.08 and 47.11, respectively.
- The highest scorers on the men’s squad were Klarsfeld and Sallam each with 22 points, followed by Sean Doran with 15 points.
- In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Sallam, Klarsfeld, Murray Coueslant, and Ante Dany finished in second place with a time of 1:35.98, one second behind the first place team of Canisius.
UP NEXT
The Red Foxes will host their home opener on Thursday, October 24 at 6 p.m. They will take a break from MAAC play to welcome Fordham University to Poughkeepsie for the midweek matchup.

The Canisius men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to MAAC opponent Marist on Friday morning at the ECC Flickinger Center Pool. The women’s team fell to the Red Foxes by a score of 189-111, while the men’s team lost 183-115.
The women’s team earned top-three finishes in eight of the 14 races on Friday. Freshman Isabel Sapio earned three top-three finishes after she won the 200-yard breaststroke, placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke and was part of the Golden Griffins winning unit in the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Ashlynn Gilfillan also won two races on Friday, placing first in the women’s 200-yard freestyle while also serving as a member of Canisius’ 400-yard freestyle relay.
In diving, senior Gianna Cornelia took third in the 1-meter dive event with her score a 193.86. Junior Vinnie Costanzo placed second in the 3-meter (218.25) and fourth in the 1-meter.
In the men’s competition, the 200-yard medley relay team of seniors Kenyon Winkky and Kyle Griffin, junior Lucas Kennedy and sophomore Kyle Kimerer took first-place to begin the meet. The 400-yard medley relay team of Winkky, Griffin, Kimerer and sophomore Liam O’Connell also scored a first-place finish on the day.
O’Connell earned four top-three finishes for the Blue and Gold, finishing first in the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay, second in the 200-yard freestyle and third as a member of the Griffs’ 200-yard medley relay team.
The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will return to action Oct. 26, when the teams travel to compete at Geneseo in Geneseo, N.Y. Action is set to get underway at 1 p.m.
