Marist Women Show Strength on Night 2 of 2016 MAACS

Women’s Meet

The second day of finals of the 2016 MAAC Championships started with the women’s 500 free. The victory went to Rebecca Anthone of Canisius College, who finished in a new school record time of 4:56.34. The girls of Marist then took 6 of the other 7 finishes in the A final, with Bethany Powhida finishing 2nd in 4:57.92 and Sara Nestrowitz finishing 3rd in 5:01.64.

In the 200 IM, it was Mary Mangione of Iona who took the victory in a time of 2:06.16, Julianna Runk of Rider who finished 2nd (2:06.63) and Breanna Lydon of Marist who finished 3rd (2:07.65).

The Red Foxes went on to continue to garner valuable points, with a 1-2 finish in the 50 free. Meredith Wurtz won the event in 23.48, shedding 0.04 seconds off of her previous school record, her teammate Georgia Goldman finished just behind her in 23.66 and Canisius’s Hannah Graesser took 3rd in 23.83.

The 200 free relay was dominated by the Red Foxes, with the A team of Goldman, Bridget Curley, Powhida and Wurtz touching in 1:35.09, just over a second off of the conference record of 1:34.08, set in 2008.

Men’s Meet

Coming off of a successful first night, the Rider men continued to show their strength on the 2nd day of the meet. In the 500 free it was Zachary Molloy who won the event for the Broncs in 4:25.15, with teammate William Molloy finishing 3rd in 4:28.30. Separating the Broncs was Marist’s Ryan Murphy, who clocked in 2nd in 4:26.47.

Benjamin Schulte of Bryant was the 1st place finisher in the 200 IM, clocking in in 1:49.49, finishing just behind him was Connor Daly of Fairfield (1:50.42) and Shawn Warner of Niagara (1:50.70).

The Broncs continued to dominate in the 50 free, with 3 of the top 4 finishes. The victory went to Matthan Martir (20.18), 2nd was Daniel Knoll (20.70) of Marist, 3rd was Jeff Prichard (20.82) and 4th was Adam Phillips (21.18). In the 200 free relay, it was the Rider boys that one yet again. The A team of Martir, Zachary, Vincent Gibbons and Prichard clocked in in 1:20.75, almost 3 seconds ahead of 2nd place finishers, Bryant (1:23.32).

The diving event of the night was the men’s 1m, where Canisius’s Travis Wright took the title with a score of 314.00, 2nd was Josh Dodway of Marist, who finished with a score of 291.30.
