Marshall Hires Ian Walsh as New Assistant Coach

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall Swimming/Diving has hired Ian Walsh as its assistant coach, head coach Bill Tramel announced Thursday.

Walsh comes to Huntington from Albright College where he served as head assistant coach, leading the men’s and women’s programs to the Middle Atlantic Conference championship resulting in Coach of the Year honors for the head coaches of both programs.

“It is a great honor to be given the opportunity to work alongside Coach Tramel here at Marshall,” said Walsh. “I’m excited to be a part of the Thundering Herd community and I look forward to building this program further.”

Prior to his arrival at Albright, Walsh was the Graduate Assistant Coach at Bloomsburg University. There, Walsh assisted in coaching NCAA Division II All-American performances.

Walsh has held assistant coaching positions at Albright Aquatic Club and Central Columbia Aquatic Club. He has also held counselor positions at West Point Army Swim Camp.

“I am thrilled to have Ian joining us in Huntington,” said Tramel. “He is an energetic coach, eager to learn. Most importantly, he understands what it takes to be successful in this sport. It was imperative to find the right person to help lead our program. The thing that stood out with Ian is he wants to be at Marshall. He is excited about what we are building here, and I’m looking forward to enjoying success with our staff, and our team.”

As a student-athlete, Walsh was the 2009 Atlantic 10 Champion in the 100 Breaststroke while representing Duquesne University. During his career, he set school records in 100 Breaststroke, 200 Breaststroke and was a member of Duquesne school-record relay teams in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Medley Relay.

As a high school prep swimmer, Walsh was an All-American at Pocono Mountain West High School in Pocono Summit, Pa. and also set club records for the Pocono Family YMCA.
