Nicoló Martinenghi has been on fire this year breaking sprint breaststroke records, and he re-broke the WJR and the Italian senior record in the 100 breast tonight in Netanya on the final day of the European Junior Championships.
He wasn’t done after that, though, as he was set to swim the breaststroke leg of Italy’s 4×100 medley relay, the last event of the meet. Battling against a tough Russian squad, Martinenghi spun through the 2nd leg of the relay to split a 58.93, the fastest of the field by over two seconds.
Altogether, Martinenghi and his teammates combined for a 3:35.24, just ahead of Russia’s 3:35.44. That time was good for gold, as well as the World Junior Record, taking 1.20 seconds off of the old record, which happened to belong to Russia.
SPLIT COMPARISON
ITALY (new record)
- Thomas Ceccon 54.72
- Nicoló Martinenghi 58.93
- Federico Burdisso 52.69
- Davide Nardini 48.90
RUSSIA (old record)
- Roman Larin 55.50
- Anton Chupkov 59.84
- Daniil Pakhomov 51.74
- Vladislav Kozlov 49.36
Nardini is the oldest of the four, having turned 18 this March, while Martinenghi turns 18 in a month. Ceccon turned 16 in January after he set an Italian 15 & under 100 free record, while Burdisso is still 15.
Ceccon and Martinenghi were the real difference makers for Italy, splitting considerably faster than the Russian legs in their respective strokes.
We shouldn’t forget the fact that Germany didnt compete, GB didnt compete with its best talents and some other top talents (for example Gonzalez from Spain) also didnt compete, otherwise the medal table would have looked different.
Very excited to see what those talents will do at the junior worlds. I think the following european talents might win medals there (olympic events only):
Martinenghi (should easily win gold in the 100 breast)
Kolesnikov (should win gold in the 200 back + maybe a medal in the 100 back)
Gonzalez (should win a medal in the 200 back + maybe 1 or 2 medals in the individual medleys)
Kuimov (should win a medal in the 100… Read more »
And when come the olympic games USA wins half of the gold medals. At least at the last 2 olympics. I know. MP isn’t there anymore.
We’ll see how develop these Russian juniors in particular. They are used to crushing the competition at the junior level for several years. But it doesn’t mean they dominate later at the senior level.
Why did Germany decide not to participate?
Lots of them competed in the european junior championships and will compete in world junior championships and in Budapest. I think they need to choose in which they will be fully tapered.
Russia and Hungary have really destroyed the competition. Italia great meet too.
Best French results:
BOYS. 18-year-old Maxime Grousset was the leader. The future of French men’s sprint. 3rd in the 50 fly in 23.88. He swam 23.83 in semifinals. And 7th in the 100 free in 49.85, a new PB for him. And 3rd in the 50 free in 22.59.
Men’s 4X100 medley relay 4th in 3.41.67
GIRLS. Mathilde Jean 6th in the 50 back.
Cyrielle Duhamel. 3rd in the 400 IM in 4.43.63. A new French NAG record for 17-year-old girls. And 5th in the 200 IM in 2.14.66.
Yes, Russian and Hungarian basically dominated the field: Kesely, Milak, Egorova was outstanding and Kolesnikov (despite 2 golds and a silver medal) probably is not in top shape.
Great meeting for Italian’s men (Martinenghi and the other breaststroker, plus the 50m freestyler) not so much for the italian’s women.
The 3 best youngster was Burdisso (the only 2001 who won a medal) in the fly (100&200), Ceccon (good back 50&100) and the swiss Ponti (50&100&200 fly)
Very promising future for Italian swimming.

Watch out for Ceccon, he is very versatile, fast over 3 strokes
58.9 is cookin
I don’t know what “cookin” means but when you swim 59.23 flat-start you can split around 58.60/58.70 in the relay. With the fatigue of the individual event it’s normal he was a little bit slower than that.
