Day 2 Heats Highlights
After an electric performance to capture gold in last night’s women’s 400m IM final, 24-year-old Mary-Sophie Harvey of Canada staked her claim on a second event.
Racing in the heats of the 100m free, Harvey stopped the clock at a speedy 54.60. That landed lane 4 for tonight’s final just .01 ahead of the 50m fly winner here, Melanie Henique.
This performance checks in as yet another personal best for on-fire Harvey. Entering this Giant Series, the Canadian’s career-quickest result sat at the 54.64 which garnered her a 4th place finish at the 2023 Pan American Games.
Splits for Harvey this morning included 26.95/27.65.
Check out Harvey’s recent onslaught of PB’s performed at last month’s Quebec Cup, highlighted by a 1:57.26 200 free.
Frenchman Yohann Ndoye-Brouard topped the heats of the men’s 100m back, hitting 53.41 for the sole outing of the field under 54 seconds.
Michael Andrew of the United States was in the water as well, contesting the men’s 50m free.
24-year-old Andrew snagged the 2nd seed in 22.23, just .04 behind leader Maxime Grousset who earned the pole position in 22.19.
Israeli Meiron Cheruti is also in the hunt, courtesy of his 22.24 morning swim. Suriname’s Renzo Tjon-a-Joe and Florent Manaudou of the host nation are also in the mix, clocking respective AM efforts of 22.25 and 22.36 to keep things close.
I like this meet format. The sprinters are doing prelim, semi, final format with not much rest. They have opportunity to work on their race technique and sprint endurance. I don’t know how this meet is connected to the next stop in St Germain which I think is the finale. It looks like a lot of fun.
It looks like she was able to bring that down to 54.26 in the final. Well done MSH.
So McNeill, McIntosh, Ruck and Harvey on the freestyle relay. Or potentially Oleksiak if she can get back to form.
As of now. Trials always bring surprises. I’d be surprised if a few of the younger ones didn’t drop some time.
I’m thinking Fournier will be one of them.
Smith looks to be on the upswing. Time will tell.

I became a big MSH fan during ISL, and it’s great to see her doing so well leading into Paris.
Mary Sophie in great form,Taylor Ruck bouncing back,Maggie Macneil,Summer Macintosh….Penny Oleksiak needs to get in form quickly,Rebecca Smith and a host of young swimmers make 100f trials very interesting.
You’ve got Julie, Ella, Sienna, Mia, Brooklyn all with best times in the 55 range. It will be interesting to see if any of them can take a step up at the trials with a PB.
Delia is also developing into a good sprint freestyler.

She might be dangerous, indeed! Not just in 100 free, but especially in 200 back. I don’t know how Mallette is doing that, but she keeps dropping time like an age-grouper for the second year in a row!
They need to take a very big step up. 54 is not going to cut it for Paris.
It would be a big step for sure. Some of the names I mentioned are probably going to be more of a factor for LA and not Paris but it will still be interesting to see how they perform in Montreal in May.
Realistically you would hope the 4×1 free lineup for the finals would include Maggie, Taylor, Summer and Penny as that would most likely be their best chance at perhaps pushing for a Bronze medal. Mary-Sophie Harvey will definitely be a big part of that group as well judging by her recent form.
in the heats of the 4×1 in the World Champs 2023 in Japan she went 53.99 from a flying start (2nd swimmer) so this seems to be in line with that. Unfortunately in the finals of the 4×1 of that competition she went a bit slower at 54.57 also from flying start. (3rd swimmer)
She split 53.8 at Pan Ams. Canada could definitely use a consistent 53 split.
