Rome High School’s Mason Hunter captured the boys’ 4A-5A 100 breast state title this past weekend at the GHSA state championships in record-breaking fashion. Hunter first took down the state record from Jack Dalmolin (a freshman swimmer at Arizona State) in prelims with a 54.73, before delivering an even bigger swim in finals with a 54.28. Both swims were personal bests for the fast-rising swimmer. Notably, Hunter is the back-to-back state champion in the 100 breast, but his time from this year’s championships is more than two seconds faster than his 2017 time (56.66).
Hunter also went home with a big personal best in the 200 IM. He claimed the state title in 1:53.41, which is almost 5 seconds faster than his previous personal best from the December 2017 Georgia short course championships.
Hunter recently committed to swim for the Michigan Wolverines as part of the Class of 2018.
