Mastromatteo, McMurray Shine As Varsity Blues Get LCM Racing In At Toronto Grand Prix

DAY 1 RECAP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s and women’s swimming team won every event on Day 1 of the Toronto Grand Prix (Jan. 20) at Varsity Pool.

WOMEN’S RESULTS: Fourth-year veteran Ainsley McMurray and rookie standout Nina Mollin led the No. 2 nationally-ranked Blues women with two victories each. McMurray won both the 50 freestyle (26.17) and 200 freestyle (2:04.05), while Mollin took the top spot in the 200 butterfly (2:15.85) and 400 IM (4:53.40).

Second-year life science major Madeline Spencer placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.25), with Hayley Klenk winning the 200 backstroke (2:17.92).

MEN’S RESULTS: First-year commerce major Ben Loewen led the No. 3 Varsity Blues men on Friday. The Toronto native won the 200 butterfly (2:02.94) and 200 backstroke (2:02.99).

2020 Olympian Gabe Matromatteo placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.60), while Liam Weaver placed first in the men’s 50 freestyle. Veteran Bernard Godolphin won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.18, with Jacob Gallant touching the wall first in the men’s 400 IM (4:26.15).

UP NEXT: The Blues battle the Calgary Dinos in dual-meet action tomorrow (Jan. 21) at noon, before wrapping up the Grand Prix at 4:30 p.m.

DAY 2 RECAP

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming team put forth another dominant effort on Day 2 of the Toronto Grand Prix (Jan 21) at Varsity Pool.

WOMEN’S RESULTS: Ainsley McMurray led a U of T 1-2-3-4-5 sweep in the women’s 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 57.12. Lily Chubaty (58.10) and Teagan Vander Leek (58.73) were second and third, respectively.

Nina Mollin won the 100 butterfly (1:01.64), while McMurray was third in 1:05.27. Hayley Klenk (1:03.86) and Aleksa Gold (1:03.89) finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, while Madeline Spencer won the 200 breaststroke in 2:39.15.

Claire Howard (4:25.17), Anna Hein (4:25.98) and Mahayli Datars (4:27.81) placed 2-3-4 in the women’s 400 freestyle.

MEN’S RESULTS: Ben Loewen (57.64) and Carter Buck (57.77) finished 1-2 in the 100 backstroke, while Bernard Godolphin won the 100 freestyle in 52.41 seconds.

2020 Olympian Gabe Mastromatteo took the top spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.99), while Quinn Matteis was first in the 400 freestyle (4:03.96).

UP NEXT: The Blues cap off a busy weekend in the pool tomorrow (Jan. 22) when they host the U of T Winter Invitational. Races begin at 1:30 p.m.
