Matt Cross to Join the City of Derby Coaching Staff

Matt Cross will join the City of Derby coaching staff and assist Mel Marshall with her elite group of swimmers.

Marshall, who in September became the first female coach to win the British Swimming Coaches Association Coach of the Year award, has developed an impressive squad of swimmers which includes Commonwealth Games participants Danielle Lowe, Harriett Cooper, Eleanor Baldwin and James Lovatt.

She is also the woman who has coached Adam Peaty since the age of 14. Over the last year Peaty has won the 50 breaststroke at the 2014 European Championships along with four golds in total at the championships to go with two golds and a silver at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

He has also set new world records in both the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke. Peaty currently ranks first in the world in the 50 and 100 breaststroke and second in the 200 breaststroke.

Cross is no stranger to assisting with the caliber of swimmer that trains at the City of Derby. His last post was assisting Jon Rudd at the Plymouth Leander club which is the home to Ruta Meilutyte and Ben Proud.

His job will also entail assisting with the top swimmers on the team as well as coaching the Midland group and overseeing the club’s development programs.
