Matt Grevers dropped a 53.2 in the 100m backstroke at the Arena Pro Swim Series Austin, but it was his 200 backstroke, 1:57, that he’s most proud of.
SwimSwam commenters felt his 200 back speed and coming home power is a positive sign for the 2015 World Championships and the 2016 Olympic Games.
Grevers, while confident about his performance and training, is mindful of rising talent, specifically Cal Golden Bear and NCAA Champion Ryan Murphy.
Grevers was relaxed and friendly as always, proudly stumping for his longtime partner TYR. If you haven’t see the new TYR Avictor commercial, see it here.

I’d almost rather be mediocre at any stroke than be an elite level backstroker in the U.S. At least this way I don’t have to have my hopes and dreams dashed because they are nonexistent. It’s gonna be rough in 2016 when we have to tell almost half of the top-10 backstrokers in the world that they can’t go to the Olympics. The 100 fly might be even worse.
100 back has been a tough event going back to the 2004….just brutal. Phelps never really cracked it, thought he scared a lot of backstrokes toying with it… I think this new crop of talent is going to make it even more so, starting with Murphy, 2016-20.
I know this must sound crazy coming from a non-American (or Australian) swimmer fan, but I never liked the 2-per country-rule
luigi – I’m personally a big fan of the way they do it at the European Championships, allowing lots of entries in prelims, and only advancing 2 per country to semis and finals.
I just don’t think that system would work at the Olympic level though, where they’re trying to attract hordes of main-stream fans.
Have to wonder if swimming has grown to the point globally where the fears of American or Chinese or Australian podium domination (aka, 3 Americans on a podium) can be done away with. I could see it by 2024 or 2028.
I would allow 3 per country at least, and have no limitations in the semis or final. I want to see the best 3 in the world win a medal, wherever they come from. I am aware of the counter-arguments.
Thanks Mel , the other day , after his 100 back ,i had the feeling it would be good if Matt was intervieuwed and here it is . One of the coolest veterans out there and allready swimming fast times . He is even getting deeper on 200 back . He is in the best conditions to accomplish a great year . Well done Matt .
One of the most consistent backstrokers out there with Irie , Clary and Larkin . Murphy is surely closing the gap with the best so that bodes well for Team Usa this summer .
Hey Mel, wasn’t it the 2013 World’s team?
Grevers missed the 2011 worlds team. In 2010 grevers suffered a weak performance at the US select meet for 2011 Worlds.
You said 2012 in the video
then I screwed up the voiceover… Thanks for catching it. I’ll fix.
