Matt Grevers was known as the “Gentle Giant” for a very long time. After his 52.08 100 meter backstroke at the 2012 US Olympic Trials, I’m not so sure the nickname fits. (Grever’s went 52.16 at the 2012 London Olympic Games to win the 100 backstroke gold.) Grevers’ 52.08 in a non-tech suit is off the charts fast, certainly the best performance in 100 backstroke ever. (Aaron Peirsol went 51.94 at the 2009 World Championships in a tech suit, aka a sausage suit.)
Grever’s has enjoyed his Olympic fame and his partnerships. TYR’s been a stalwart partner for many years, even in the down time when Grevers missed making the 2011 US World Championship Team. TYR stuck with him, and he credits their support with his success in 2012.

TYR is based in Huntington Beach, CA adjacent to Marina HS, which is just up the road from Tom Shield’s Edison HS also in HB. TYR would be a good fit for Tom as a hometown boy. Too bad Tom just missed out on the World’s team in 200 fly.
