Matthew Klotz Breaks His Own Deaf Swimming Record at Louisiana State Meet

LSU swimmer Matthew Klotz has re-broken his own Deaf Swimming World Record in the men’s 50 free, swimming a 23.11 on Thursday at the Louisiana state meet.

The 23-year old Klotz, racing in long course meters, shaved a few hundredths off his own record of 23.14. He did that swim last summer in a time trial at the US National Championships. The Klotz camp says that he is unshaved and untapered, with the US National Championships at the end of the month being his target meet.

Klotz is a 5-time Deaflympics gold medalist and also holds long course World records in the 50 back (25.95), 100 back (56.06), and 200 back (2:01.96). This swim also put him under the US Olympic Trials standard in the 50 free for the first time in the qualifying period. Klotz has been exploring the possibility of trying to qualify for the Hungarian team for the 2020 Olympic Games. He has not yet hit the Olympic “B” standard in any events, however, and his 50 free record from Thursday would rank 10th this season among Hungarian men.

Klotz will be a senior at LSU next season.
