A small team from Dubai did some major damage at the British Gas Age Nationals over this past weekend in Sheffield, England.
Three swimmers from Hamilton Aquatics Dubai took part in the competition and walked away with a total of 17 medals (nine gold, five silver and three bronze), which topped the medal table at the meet and also allowed the team to take home the top male points trophy as well.
13 year old Cameron Matthews, who is of South African descent, led the way winning both the 200 IM (2:12.25) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.79) in British and South African age group record times along collecting the silver 200 breaststroke in a new South African age group record time of 2:25.97.
Matthews also won gold in the 400 IM, silver in the 200 freestyle and bronze in the 400 freestyle.
French-Irish swimmer Sean McNicholl won the 11-12 year old boys 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. McNicholl also took the silver in the 100 backstroke and bronze in the 200 backstroke and 400 freestyle.
Jakub Karl of the Czech Republic won the the boys 14 year old 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle along with collecting the silver in the 200 butterfly and 100 freestyle.
Ash Morris, who is originally from Huntingdon, England and has been the Head Coach of the team for the last five years could not be more proud of the athletes, “We have achieved something very special,” Morris told gulfnews.com. “This is just the beginning for these talented three boys and many more swimmers to come.”
“It is fantastic to win the medals table and it shows that swimmers can fulfill their potential in Dubai to any level. Our swimmers are inspired by their teammate Velimir Stjepanovic, who represented Serbia at the 2012 Olympics, and they all have their own goals. The future looks great.”
