Texas A&M grad Mauro Castillo Luna broke a pair of Mexican national records swimming at the Arena Grand Prix de Natacion in Tijuana, lowering marks in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
In the 200, he won in a time of 2:12.13, lowering the previous record of 2:12.25 held by Miguel de Lara Ojeda. Ojeda, who set that record at the Arena Pro Swim in Santa Clara last year, was also in the event, placing 2nd in 2:14.04. Castillo Luna’s previous best time was a 2:12.94, done at the Atlanta Pro Swim last May.
He edged out the 100 record by a similar margin, putting up a 1:00.89 to take down Ojeda’s previous mark of 1:00.99, done at the 2016 Charlotte Pro Swim. Ojeda took 2nd once again in 1:01.81. Castillo Luna’s 100 best was also from the 2017 Atlanta Pro Swim at 1:01.58.
He also swam the 50 breast, placing 2nd in 28.24 to Ojeda (27.97). That national record, set in 2009 by Alejandro Jacobo, remains intact at 27.71.
In his final college season, Castillo Luna finished 8th in the 100 and 9th in the 200 breast at NCAAs. He was also the runner-up in both events at the SEC Championships.
