Fresh off lifetime bests in the 100 and 200 free, newly transferred Texas swimmer Maxime Rooney kept it rolling on day 3 in the 100 fly. Rooney had a personal best of 52.28 in the 100 fly coming into the meet, and in prelims this morning he skipped right over 51, roaring to a 50.68. Rooney’s time earned him the top seed for tonight’s final, and was the only swim in the field under 51.
The time makes Rooney the #4 American all-time in the 100 fly, behind only Caeleb Dressel, Michael Phelps, and Ian Crocker. Rooney is also now the #12 performer all-time in the world, sitting just .01 seconds behind Great Britain’s james Guy.
Here is the current top 5 Americans all-time in the 100 fly:

Who?what?when?
Wonder what happened at Florida that made him underperform. Too bad he lost a few years in his career.
We shouldn’t discount that his surge really started in his junior season at Florida. He had a fantastic SEC Championship meet, so it’s not like these swims just came from out of nowhere in the last 3 months.
Thank you Braden.
For one, he’s just a much better LCM swimmer than SCY. He has elite times LCM. SCY, doubt if he’s top 20 all-time in any SCY event. Second, I don’t think he ever adapted to the post-NCAAs to LCM target meet, and last year the Gator men underperformed LCM anyway. Third, there’s a serious possibility he was overtrained with Troy trying to match up with Dressel and all the other guys. Fourth, the LensCrafters in Gainesville sucks, and the one in Austin is much better.
Murphy, Wilson, Rooney, Dressel… the ultimate Team USA 400 medley
The gap between Dressel and Rooney on fly is much larger than the gap between Dressel and Held on free.
true , u got a solid point there
Farris, Wilson, Dressel, Farris would be quicker
Wow! What a pleasant surprise! Really want to know what kind of training happened in Austin made such a huge difference. Is there anyone else with more improvement after switching a team?
It was a Haas to Rooney mojo transplant.
Held moving seemed to help him.
who is gonna be an Olympian within one year time along with Caeleb ? Splendid Breakout swim for Maxime !!!
That would have been good for silver in the Gwangju final.
amaziinnnnnng
Dressel has Top two of all time.. They should count a little better
Looks like they counted fine, maybe flex those reading skills a little
Strong.
