McCabe Puts Up Top Time in the 200 Breaststroke at Colleges’ Cup

Canadian Olympian and 2011 World Championships bronze medalist Martha McCabe posted a 2:21.84 to win the women’s 200 breaststroke at the UBC Odlum Brown Colleges’ Cup. McCabe’s time matches the time that Jenna Laukkanen of Finland recorded in October.

The time is over two seconds off her lifetime best of 2:19.17, which she put up at the Short Course World Championships in Doha last year. McCabe who represented the Western Canadian Club All-Stars at the competition also set a new meet record.

Canadian National Team member Emily Overholt, who represented the Western Canadian Club All-Stars, posted two top five times and broke two meet records. There first came in the women’s 400 IM where she took the event in a time of 4:33.46, which places her fourth in the world rankings. She then followed that up by recording a 2:11.23 in the women’s 200 butterfly, which puts her fifth in the world rankings.

Nick Kostiuk of the University of Alberta swept the breaststroke events setting meet records in the 50 (27.90), 100 (1:01.12) and 200 (2:10.83). Kostiuk’s time in the 200 breaststroke has him sitting in the fourth place position in the world rankings.

Tera Van Beilen of UBC took the women’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:07.82, which currently ranks fifth in the world while Keegan Zanatta of UBC won the men’s 400 freestyle in a time of 3:45.75, which ranks fourth in the world. Both times were meet records.

UBC finished on top of the point standings in both the men’s and women’s events.

  • Men’s 200 backstroke – Joe Byram – University of Alberta – 1:59.13
  • Men’s 50 freestyle – Alex Loginov – UBC – 22.79
  • Women’s 200 IM – Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson – UBC – 2:13.55

That list needs to be updated. Jessica Eriksson of Sweden went a 2:23.89 at Swedish SC Nationals, Sophie Hansson went a 2:24.76, Amanda Rutqvist a 2:24.86, Stina Gardell 2:25.41, Vilma Ekström 2:25.61. All at Swedish SC Nationals in Helsingborg last week.
