McEvoy Kicks Off Possible SC Title Treble With 100 Free All Comers Record

As reported earlier today, Australian sprinter Cameron McEvoy scored a shiny new All Comers Record while competing on the first night of finals of his nation’s annual Short Course Swimming Championships. With 2016 Olympic Champion in the LCM version of the race, Kyle Chalmers, out of the finals mix due to a health scare, the pool was wide open for McEvoy to stake his claim on his first of potentially three individual titles at the meet.

And make his mark he did, as ‘The Professor’ raced out to an opening split of 21.97, the only man of the field to go sub-22. McEvoy then brought it home in a solid 24.22 to register a final mark of 46.19. That not only crushed his prelim swim of 47.45, but it also notched a new personal best for the Bond swimmer, overtaking his previous personal record of 46.31 set at this same meet last year.

McEvoy’s outing tonight also established a new All Comers Record, the mark representing the fastest time by any nationality on Australian soil. The previous record was held by Matthew Abood at 46.29 all the way since 2009, so McEvoy’s time last year was just .02 off the mark.

McEvoy moves on to the 50m freestyle and 200m freestyle races, which take place on Friday and Saturday, respectively. At his nation’s Long Course Championships in April of this year, which doubled as Australia’s Olympic Trials, McEvoy clinched titles across the 50/100/200 freestyle.

It’s amazing how fast Australians swim year around. No Americans could approach such a time in the fall. While it gives them an advantage in season meets, I bet they have a shorter peak period during taper. Just a guess.

Maybe not in the 100 but Ledecky will beat the worlds best time in 200-1500 while warming up
