McGill Men & Women Sweep RSEQ Championships For First Time Since 2001

2020 RSEQ Swimming Championships

For the first time since 2001, McGill University swept the men’s and women’s team titles at the RSEQ Championships in Sherbrooke, featuring all of the University teams in Quebec facing off along with the Ottawa Gee-Gees. It was also McGill’s first win in the combined points race since 2004.

MEN’S MEET

Leading the way for the McGill men was Clement Secchi, who won six gold medals including four individual.

Secchi won the men’s 100 back (54.25), 200 back (1:58.17), 50 fly (24.15) and 100 fly (52.95), and also contributed on the team’s winning 4×50 and 4×100 medley relays.

Also earning an individual win for McGill was Tengbo Yu, who took the men’s 50 breast (28.07) and also led off their winning 4×50 free relay.

Placing second in the men’s race was Ottawa, who were led by Davide Casarin. Casarin swept all four of his individual events, claiming the men’s 100 (50.17), 200 (1:47.74), 400 (3:50.22) and 1500 freestyle (15:22.37), and also anchored the Gee Gee’s winning 4×100 free relay.

His teammate Will Barrett was the other male swimmer to win multiple individual events, picking up the 100 (1:01.81) and 200 breast (2:16.18).

WOMEN’S MEET

Daphne Danyluk dominated for the McGill women similar to how Secchi did for the men, winning four individual events and added two more golds on relays.

Danyluk won the women’s 50 back (28.06), 100 back (1:01.08), 200 back (2:09.14) and 200 fly (2:14.89), and also led off the team’s winning 4×50 and 4×100 medley relays. In the 4×100, she hit a personal best in the 100 back in 59.74.

Placing second in the women’s meet was Montreal, who had three individuals win multiple events in Anais Arlandis (50, 100 fly), Charlotte Beauchemin (50, 100 free) and Justine Rheaume (200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM).

Sherbrooke’s Marie-Laurence Godin had two wins of her own in the women’s 50 and 200 breast.

Good to see some coverage of Canadian university swimming. The first paragraph should read “… all of the University teams in QUEBEC…”
