McKendree Picks Up Verbal Commitments from Arthur Souza and Ethan Hanson

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Arthur Souza

A Brazilian national, Arthur Souza has announced that he will be traveling to the United States to compete for McKendree University, a DII school located in Lebanon, Illinois, this fall. He currently trains with the Minas Tenis Clube in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Mckendree University! Thank you to all my family, friends and coaches for all their support! I can’t wait to be part of such a great team. Go Bearcats!”

Souza has twice been selected for his country’s national team, first in 2016 and again in 2020. In 2020 he competed at the COPA UANA Swimming Cup, where his highest finish was 4th place in the 100 meter free (52.59).

Top Times in LCM (and SCY conversions)

  • 50 free – 23.66 (20.59)
  • 100 free – 51.5 (44.54)
  • 200 free – 1:53.3 (1:38.94)

Souza will be joining an already deep, and talented, McKendree sprint freestyle group. Last year’s sprint group was led by a junior, Gregg Lichinsky, who finished in third in both the 100 free and 100 fly at the 2021 DII NCAA Championships. McKendree finished in 7th in the 400 free relay at that meet, their highest finish of the free relays. Both Alexander Skinner, who is set to graduate, and Fabio Dalu, who is transferring to Ohio State, will leave openings on that relay for the 2021-2022 season.

Ethan Hanson

The second McKendree commitment comes from Ethan Hanson of Hudson, Wisconsin. Hudson swims for Mako Aquatics as well as Hudson High School.

“I am honored to announce my commitment to pursue my academic and athletic career at McKendree University! Thank you to my coaches, friends, & family who’ve supported me along the way, as well as Lori and the American College Connection team. I can’t wait to swim under such incredible coaches and alongside these amazing athletes!”

A breaststroke specialist, Hanson was a finalist at the 2021 WIAA Boys Division 1 State Championship meet earlier this year, finishing 5th in the 100 breast with a time of 58.21.

Top Times (SCY)

  • 100 fly – 52.85
  • 100 breast – 58.21
  • 200 breast – 2:09.12
  • 200 IM – 2:00.38

Hanson will add depth to a breaststroke group that was led by the NCAA champion in the 200 breast and bronze medalist in the 100 breast, Filipe Pinheiro, last year. McKendree’s breastroke group featured four swimmers below 57.0 in the 100 and two below 2:00 in the 200 during the 2020-21 season.
