17-year-old Mona McSharry already crushed a new Irish Senior National record in the short course 100m breaststroke while competing at the 2017 Swim Cup Amsterdam, but the youngster left a little in the tank to also do some damage to the 50m distance tonight. McSharry won the women’s 50m breast in a time of 30.19, the only sub-31 second outing of the field.
Entering the meet, McSharry’s personal best in the short course version of the event rested at the 30.94, which she clocked last year. Tonight, however, the teen wasted that away with a huge .75 time drop to overtake the previous national record of 30.31 set by the recently retired Sycerika McMahon back in 2012.
McSharry can add this senior Irish record to her 50m breaststroke LCM record she owns from her performance at the World Junior Championships. The teen also owns Irish long course junior records in the 50m/100m/200m breaststroke and 50m butterfly, as well as the short course junior records in 50m free, 50m/100m/200m breaststroke and 100m events.
Congratulations and well done Mona your are special and congrats to your coach Grace
