Medeiros Posts World’s Top Time in the 50 Backstroke

D’Artagnan Dias, SwimSwam’s Brazilian correspondent and a resident of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, contributed to this article.

Despite hot and humid weather conditions, that seemed to effect several swimmer’s performances, Etiene Medeiros posted the world’s top time in the 50 backstroke.

Medeiros won the women’s 50 backstroke at the Brazilian National Championships in a South American record time of 27.37 putting her ahead of Fu Yuanhi who posted a 27.51 in May. Medeiros is coming off a spectacular performance at the World Short Course Championships where she won the 50 backstroke setting a new world record in the process.

Natalia Diniz finished second in a time of 29.92 followed by Aline Caetano who collected the bronze in a time of 30.14.

After being disqualified in the 400 IM Thiago Simon got his redemption in the 200 breaststroke, winning the event in a championship record time of 2:10.58. The time is also a lifetime best for Simon whose time was faster than the World Championships qualifying time of 2:11.66. South American record holder Henrique Barbosa finished second in a time of 2:13.80 followed by Felipe Monni who finished in third in a time of 2:14.06.

Thiago Pereira led the men´s 200IM for start to finish. Pereira took the butterfly out in a 24.91 followed by a 28.97 backstroke split a 33.70 in the breaststroke and closed out the race in a 29.65 in the freestyle.  He took the event in a time of 1:57.23 which is a championship record and well under the 2:00.28 which is the qualifying standard for Kazan.

After the race Pereira told the press that he is rested but not fully tapered for this competition.

Henrique Rodrigues finished second and also qualified for the World Championships posting a 1:59.89. Lucas Oliveira finished third in a time of 2:03.42.

Marcelo Chieriguini opened the men’s 100 freestyle in an aggressive fashion turning in a time of 23.00 which was half a second faster than his morning split time. Although Chieriguini held on to the lead to win the event in a time of 49.07 it was obvious that the hot and humid weather conditions had taken a toll on him as he was not capable of giving a post race interview due to exhaustion.

Matheus Santana finished second in a time of 49.16 followed by Fratus who posted a 49.46. The swim for Fratus was disappointing to see as he had recorded a lifetime best of 48.57 in the prelims.

Larissa Oliveira was able to get the best of Graciele Hermann in what was an exciting finish in the women’s 100 freestyle. Oliveira took the event in a time of 54.61 setting a new South American record. Hermann also recorded a lifetime best finishing second in a time of 54.76. Early leader Alessandra Marchioro finished in a tie with Diane Becker for third with both women finishing in a time of 55.69.

Joanna Maranhao posted a 2:14.03 in the prelims, setting a new championship record and qualifying for Kazan. In the finals she improved on her morning’s performance taking the event in a time of 2:13.40. Gabrielle Roncatto finished second in a time of 2:17.05 qualifying for World Junior Championships. She was followed by Nathalia Almeida who touched in a time of 2:17.47.

Daniel Orzechowski took the men’s 50 backstroke in a time of 25.02. He was followed by teammates Guilherme Guido who posted a 25.17 and Fabio Santi who finished in a time of 25.45.

Pamela Alencar barely held on for the win in the women’s 200 breaststroke posted a time of 2:33.38 finishing one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Beatriz Travalon who hit the wall in a time of 2:33.39. Thamy Ventorin finished third in a time of 2:34.34.

Bruna Primati had a strong final 200 meters taking the women’s 400 freestyle in a time of 4:14.90. She was followed by Manuella Lyrio who touched in a time of 4:15.02 and Viviane Jungblut who finished in a time of 4:15.14.

Miguel Valente won the men’s 400 freestyle in a time of 3:52.54 followed by Lucas Kanieski who finished in a time of 3:53.32. Luiz Altamir finished third in a time of 3:54.83.

The good today:Medeiros underwaters. It was in another league.Makes every swimmer in the race looks a junior one.Near a body lenght after start.

The bad:Men’s 100free.Awful too watch, it looked like everyone was dead tired, only two swimmers improved their morning times.
