The 12th CANA African Swimming Championships in Mangueng wrapped up today in terms of the pool competition, but not before several meet records went down.

Oussama Sahnoune from Algeria sneaked under the 50-second mark in the men’s LCM 100m freestyle to take the victory in 49.60. Splitting 23.68/25.92, 24-year-old Sahnoune clenched the win in a new championship record time, beating the previous record of 49.81 set by Tunisia’s Ous Melloulli back in 2008. He was the only competitor to clear 50 seconds, with South African Calvyn Justus finishing in 50.21 for silver.

Later in the meet, Sahnoune would have to settle for silver in the splash n’ dash, scoring 2nd place in the men’s 50m freestyle with his mark of 22.92. He would represent just 1 of 2 men to dip beneath the 23-second threshold, as South African Douglas Erasmus snatched the gold in 22.39. That beat his own meet record of 22.50 set in the prelim session.

24-year-old Myles Brown from South Africa proved fast enough to take the men’s 400m freestyle gold, clocking a time of 3:54.80 for a new meet record.  He was able to hold off a charging Marwan Elamrawy from Egypt, who finished less than 2 second behind in 3:56.45. Brown threw down a final 50m split of 26.78 to Elamrawy’s 28.57 to help secure the win.

The women also got in on the meet record-breaking action, as Kaylene Corbett nabbed the gold in the women’s 50m breaststroke race. At just 17 years of age, Corbett (RSA) took the win in 32.58, surpassing the previous met record mark of 32.64 held by Achieng Ajulu-Buchell of Kenya since 2008.

The men’s and women’s 5k open water swims take place on Sunday, October 23rd.
