Former University of Virginia standout Megan Moroney is one of just two scratches on day 1 prelims of the U.S. Olympic Trials Wave I meet.
Moroney was the 24th seed and would have been just inside the circle seeded heats in the women’s 100 back. Moroney was a 17-time NCAA All-American between 2016 and 2020, but would have had to extend her competitive career another full year post-graduation after the coronavirus pandemic pushed the Olympics and Olympic Trials to 2021. Moroney hadn’t registered any swims in USA Swimming’s database since the ACC Championships in February of 2020.
The other scratch from this morning’s heats was in a similar situation. Henry Gaissert was a multi-time Ivy League scorer for Yale, wrapping up his senior year in 2020. He’s scratched out of the 100 free this morning.
