A&M men sweep all but two events in road win over Florida Atlantic

The Aggie men of Texas A&M went on the road Thursday night, cleaning up against Florida Atlantic with wins in every event but the 200 and 100 frees.

The lineup was an abbreviated college schedule, with only 100s of fly, back and breast.

The Aggies highlighted their night with 1-2-3 sweeps of three different events, the 1000 free, the 500 free and the 100 fly. In the 1000, senior Hayden Duplechain was the winner in 9:41.51. Mitch Glander and Miha Bernat followed him in for a sweep of the very first individual event.

The 500 went to freshman Gonzalo Carazo, who put up a 4:32.53 with Duplechain and Glander just behind. And in the 100 fly, it was junior Jacob Wallace taking the title in 51.50. Close behind was freshman Brock Bonetti, and Mateo Muzek took third.

Florida Atlantic managed to pull out a pair of wins, though, courtesy of junior Matthieu Burtez. Burtez first won the 200 free in 1:40.72, then came back to take the 100 free with a 45.83.

Texas A&M’s Tyler Henschel swept both diving events on the boards, scoring 357.97 on 1-meter and 403.12 on 3-meter. Carazo also claimed a share of two individual titles, tying for the 100 breast win after taking that 500 free. Carazo went 58.34 in the breaststroke to tie with teammate Mauro Castillo.

The Aggies punctuated their win with a 1-2 finish in the 200 free relay. Sophomore Jacob Gonzalez was the key there, splitting a field-best 20.03 on the end of the A relay. A&M needs a sprinter to step up big following the graduation of Kyle Troskot, and Gonzalez looks like he’ll be one of the guys fighting for that role.
