Podium:

- Zhier Fan (MTRO) – 1:01.02
- Ben Dillard (TASC) – 1:02.32
Virginia tech’s AJ Pouch won the men’s 100 breast tonight in Irvine, holding off a late charge from Metroplex Aquatics 17-year-old Zhier Fan. Fan roared to a new personal best of 1:01.02 in the race to earn Silver. Fan scratched out of his events yesterday (day 3) after swimming to a massive lifetime best in the 200 breast on Day 2, in order to focus on the 100 breast today.
Fan’s swim tonight marked a personal best of 1:01.74, which he swam at the U.S. Olympic Trials Wave I meet in June. This morning, Fan swam a 1:02.19 to qualify 2nd for the A final. Here is a split comparison between Fan’s previous best from Wave I Trials, his prelims swim this morning, and his new personal best from tonight:
Splits | 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials Wave I | 2021 Speedo Summer Championships – Irvine PRELIMS | 2021 Speedo Summer Championships – Irvine FINALS |
50m | 28.97 | 29.23 | 28.75 |
100m | 32.77 | 32.96 | 32.27 |
Final Time | 1:01.74 | 1:02.19 | 1:01.02 |
Fan was faster on both the 1st and 2nd 50s tonight versus his previous best from Wave I. This morning, Fan was half a second slower on the first 50 than he was tonight, and 0.69 seconds slower on the 2nd 50. Importantly, 1:01.02 would have finished 19th in prelims of the 100 breast at the Olympic Trials Wave II meet, just one spot outside alternates for finals. It took a 1:00.81 to advance to semifinals at Trials.
In addition to the lifetime best, Fan has now cracked the all-time top 10 for 17-18 boys in the LCM 100 breast. Fan, just 17, now ranks 9th all-time among 17-18 boys, and is just 1.20 seconds off Michael Andrew National Age Group Record. Here is the current all-time top 10 for 17-18 boys:
