Meyer and Twichell take Crippen Cup 10K Titles

A strong field assembled for the 2014 Crippen Cup – the centerpiece event of the Open Water Swimming Festival in Ft. Myers Florida.  With $10,000 in total prize money up for grabs several of the competitors from last week’s FINA 10K Open Water World Cup stop in Cancun made their way to this race.  This is the same venue where the 2012 USA Swimming open water nationals were held and the organizers at Gulf Coast Swim Team once again show they know how to host outstanding open water swimming events.

For the men it was 2012 Olympian Alex Meyer who swam away with the race finishing in 1:52:47.39 over 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Richard Weinberger from Canada 1:53:22.60.  Germany’s Andreas Waschburger was third posting a time of 1:53:30.77.  You can see complete men’s results here

Ashley Twichell took the title for the women in a return to the site where she shined in 2012 (she won both the USA 10K and 5K titles at Miromar Lake that year).  In a race that was much closer than the men’s event, Twichell (2:04:23.65) held off charges from second place finisher Christine Jennings (2:04:24.11) and Emily Brunemann (2:04:24.53).  See complete women’s results here

The the open water swimming festival continues throughout the weekend.  For more information visit the event website.
