MHSAA Finalist Sophia Kapla Commits to Old Dominion for 2023

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

A multiple-time state high school state finalist in Michigan, Sophia Kapla of Grosse Pointe, Michigan has announced her decision to continue her education and swimming career at Old Dominion University this fall.

“I am proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic career at Old Dominion University. I want to thank my family, coaches, and teammates for the endless support along the way. Go monarchs!🦁💙👑”

Last November, Kapla finished her high school swimming career at the 2022 MHSAA Division 2 Swimming and Diving State Championships. For the second straight year, she was a finalist in both the 200 and 500 freestyles, with her top finish coming in the 500 free. In finals, she finished 5th, touching at 5:06.75. She was slightly faster during prelims of the event, finishing in 5:04.27. She also added a 10th-place finish in the 200 free (1:55.25).

In the long course pool, Kapla qualified to compete in three events at the Futures Championships held in Cary, North Carolina last summer. At that meet, her highest finish came in the 1500 free, where she took 25th in a lifetime best time of 18:23.32. She also added personal bests in the 400 free (4:38.61) and 400 IM (5:12.00).

Top SCY Times

  • 200 free – 1:53.99
  • 500 free – 5:03.33
  • 1650 free – 17:31.13
  • 200 IM – 2:11.63
  • 400 IM – 4:35.83

In 2022-2023, the Old Dominion women came in 8th out of eleven teams at the 2023 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships. The team was led by Tara Enneking, a senior, who was a finalist in three events and came home with silver in the 200 IM.

When she joins ODU this fall, Kapla will already have times in the distance freestyle events that would have put her among the program’s best last season. She would have been the second-fastest performer last season in the 500 free and would have been just off of making the team’s 800 free relay.

Kapla will have the potential to score points at the conference championships early in her career, with her times already being fast enough to earn second swims. Last season, she would have scored in the top-24 of both the 500 and 1650 freestyles. Her times would also put her just outside of ODU’s top-10 all-time in those events.

This season was the Old Dominion women’s first year competing in the CCSA after previously swimming as a member of Conference USA. They joined the men’s team, who had been competing in the conference since 2015. Both programs are led by head coach Jessica Miller Livesey, who took over as ODU’s head coach in 2019.
