Miami Goes 1-2-3 in 100 Fly, Extends Lead on Day 2 of MAC Men’s Champs

2021 MAC MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS

Miami’s lead grew on night two of the 2021 MAC Championships, as they tout a near-200-point lead with just one day remaining.

The RedHawks got right to business last night, winning the 200 medley by over two seconds while Missouri State fell to a DQ. Miami went 1:25.91, with Owen Blazer leading off in 21.91, Noah Barr going 24.05 on breast, Henju Duvenhage hitting a 20.37 on fly and Ben Chatwin bringing it home in 19.58.

Duvenhage kept things rolling for the RedHawks in the first individual event of the night, the 400 IM, going 3:48.03 in a freshman showdown with Missouri State’s Dylan Moffatt (3:48.67) and AJ Huskey (3:49.87).

Miami really poured it on in the 100 fly, sweeping the podium as they had a whopping six men into the A-final. Ryan Sego clocked a 47.92 to win it, with Nic Wamsley and the freshman Blazer tying for second (48.20). In the 100 back later on, Blazer returned for a big double, winning the event with a 47.68 over SIU’s Adam Cernek (47.79).

Miami’s dominance last night was clear — their lowest number of A-finalists in an individual event was two in the 400 IM, which was an event they won, and they had three or more in every other A-final.

Missouri State went 1-2 in the 200 free, with 500 free champ Pawel Krawczyk going 1:36.20 ahead of teammate Arthur Cury (1:36.52) and Miami freshman Uros Djokovic (1:36.70).

The Bears also claimed the 800 free relay, edging out Miami, 6:30.21 to 6:31.30. Krawczyk (1:35.87) and Cury (1:35.90) provided key legs for them, while Miami was led by their first leg, freshman Djokovic, who was 1:36.79 to nearly match his time in the individual final.

In an upset in the 100 breast, Ball State freshman Joey Garberick clocked a 53.99 to defeat the defending champion, Missouri State’s Michael Hampel (54.19), and Miami’s Barr (54.26). That marks the first MAC title for Ball State since 2006, well over a decade ago.
