It was the Big Red Show tonight at the Miami Invite. After a good start to the three day meet in Oxford, Ohio, the Denison men are sitting in first place among a host of Division I teams (and rival DIII team, Emory) while the women are in third after the day’s two events.
The meet began with the women’s 800 freestyle relay. The Big Red swimmers cranked out two top eight relays. Campbell Costley, Carolyn Kane, Tully Bradford and Molly Willingham took second in 7:25.29. Their teammates Taylor Johns, Mary Van Leuven, Kate Wright and Morgan Nuess also cracked into the top taking seventh with a time of 7:41.87.
The men’s mile went – unsurprisingly – to national champion Al Weik. Weik controlled the race from start to finish, and won easily in 15:22.53, more than fifteen seconds ahead of Emory’s freshman Christian Baker who finished at 15:37.71. Three more Big Red athletes and two Eagles pushed their way into the top eight as well – PJ Fallon, Connor Downard and Nathan Thorne finished 4-5-7. For the Eagles, Mitchell Cooper and Eagan Zettlemoyer took third and eighth.
In the women’s mile, Mckenna Newsum-Schoenberg of the Emory Eagles was second, taking the runner up spot with a time of 16:47.43. Teammate Courtney McDermott was fifth (16:53.26). For the Big Red, Johns collected fourth touching in at 16:51.08.
To finish off the session was the men’s 800 freestyle relay. Denison went 1-2 in the event, fielding two impressive racing squads. On the victorious A relay were Sean Chabot, Carlos Maciel, Max Howes and Conrad Wuorien. Their time was 6:37.65. The runner up B squad was composed of Joe Brunk, Jackson Humprey, Jack Lindell and Spencer Fronk touching with a time of 6:39.05.
The action begins again at 9 am tomorrow. For complete day one results, click here.
