Miami put forward the bigger day one here at the 2021 Mid-American Conference Championships, though not without a strong evening from the defending champions Missouri State.

The RedHawks looked great in the 200 free relay, winning by almost a full second with a 1:18.73, snapping the MAC record of 1:19.53 set by Missouri State in 2018. SIU was second in 1:19.66, nearly under the old record themselves. Miami was led off by Pedro Gueiros (20.14), followed by Cole Grosshans (19.60), Nic Wamsley (19.46) and Ben Chatwin (19.53). For the Salukis, Donat Csuvarszki led off in 19.97, while they got a 19.53 from Zander Minano.

Missouri State took the first individual win, as Pawel Krawczyk defended his title with a 4:19.40, his freshman teammate Dylan Moffatt just behind in second (4:20.84). The Bears also got a win on the 1-meter, as Michael Claunch won with a score of 310.00.

Miami hit back with a tight win in the 200 IM, though, with South African freshman Henju Duvenhage upsetting defending champ Arthur Cury of Missouri State. Duvenhage clocked a 1:45.45, just ahead of Cury (1:45.80) as both clocked lifetime bests.

In the 50 free, Miami put four men up into the A-final, while SIU put up three. After his 19.53 split on SIU’s 200 free relay, Minano got his hand to the wall first, going 19.90 to knock off Miami’s Wamsley (19.92).

The RedHawks put a bow on day one with a win in the 400 medley relay, going 3:10.30 to set another new conference record, edging the 3:10.46 done by MSU in 2018. MSU was second here, going 3:13.59. Miami had a strong relay through-and-through, with Owen Blazer (47.68) and Noah Barr (53.12) leading off, followed by a hammer 46.07 fly leg from Duvenhage and a 43.43 anchor from Wamsley.

Would be cool to see someone post a would-be NCAA qualifying time after the fact. Like just someone popping a 45.5 100 back tomorrow
