Women’s Meet
The highlight of the women’s final day of competition was Cincinnati sophomore Jackie Keire, who swam a 48.91 to win the women’s 100 free title over runner-up Nancy Larson from Emory (50.20). Keire is the school record holder about four-tenths faster than that, just as she is in all of the freestyle races 500 yards or shorter.
Keire was Cincinnati’s lone NCAA qualifier last year, and this time puts her on the bubble to get back again. Her 500 free time from earlier in the meet puts her in better position, however, so she won’t likely need another taper to get her spot in Greensboro.
Miami sophomore Stephanie Lemire won the women’s 200 breaststroke in 2:13.41 – almost a second-and-a-half faster than she was at this same meet last season.
The battle-within-the-battle at this meet between two of the best DIII teams in the country, Emory and Denison, went the way of 5-time defending champions Emory, though only by a fairly narrow 40 points.
Emory finished that off with an overall win in the women’s 400 free relay in 3:23.99. That included a 49.56 anchor from senior Nancy Larson.
Men’s Meet
The wins and the highlights on the men’s side on the final day of the the Miami Invitational, which includes a new pool and meet record from Emory junior Andrew Wilson in the 200 breaststroke.
Wilson was the only swimmer to break two minutes, touching in 1:57.18 – also a Division III automatic qualifying standard.
In the men’s 200 backstroke, Wright State freshman Mitchell Stover swam a 1:46.35 – an NCAA “B” standard, and within a second of the 15-year old school record very early in his college career.
Another freshman win came from Cincinnati’s Ryan DePietro in the men’s 200 fly with a 1:49.78. He just out-touched Matthew Dassow from Wright State who was 2nd in 1:49.91.
The home team RedHawks picked up a win in the men’s 100 free with a 44.71, beating out Denison’s Ryan Fleming (44.90) and Cincinnati’s Eitan Holder (44.96).
In the meet-closing 400 free relay, Cincinnati got the last laugh with a 3:00.17 – taking advantage of consistently-good exchanges for the win. Wright State took 2nd in 3:01.40 and Denison was 3rd in 3:02.09.
Denison Men win the meet by almost 200 points, and the only mention of any Denison swimmers or divers is that one of the Denison swimmers was beat by 19 hundredths in the 100 free?
