MEN’S 200 IM
- PSS Record: Michael Phelps- 1:56.32
TOP 3
- Michael Andrew (Race Pace Club) – 1:57.49
- Chase Kalisz (Athens Bulldogs) – 1:59.02
- Josh Prenot (Cal) – 2:00.70
Michael Andrew put together the best swim of his life by a huge margin, coming back with a 30.00 to clock a 1:57.49. His old best was a 1:59.12 from 2017. He was 24.50 going out, then 29.70 on back, 33.29 on breast, and nearly breaking 30 coming home. He now moves from 18th to 9th on the U.S. all-time performers list in this event.
Athens Bulldogs’ Chase Kalisz was 1:59.02 for 2nd, with Cal’s Josh Prenot hitting a 2:00.70 for 3rd. Caeleb Dressel, who was home in the fastest free split (29.03), took 4th in 2:01.72.
“Just doing 25’s and surfing”? Let that sink in. 🤔
Peanut Gallery: “Why are you wasting so much time on the stroke 50s? They don’t race stroke 50’s in the Olympics, you know ”
Michael Andrew, last night: “Here, hold my surf board.”
Internationally the stroke 50’s are huge. He is swimming all the stroke 50’s for the U.S. at World’s in July so it makes sense that he is training for it.
Not 50 back
2nd 50 back slot is still up for grabs, no? I think he’s currently holding it by virtue of his FINA ranking.
Interview after he won the 50 back he said he was holding the 2nd slot and plans on swimming all 4 50’s at Worlds
“I’ve been doing 25’s and surfing.”
With all due respect to MA’s training program/progression that quote is gold.
“Hey Chase, what have you been doing?” That must hurt.
Besides the turning a year older thing he wants us to believe, It sounds like he was not happy he didn’t beat CD on the first two days. Dressel is finally starting to show signs of his 2017 Worlds self, so MA better start getting used to that 2nd place feeling because it’s going to be a loooong ride
Yes, Dressel is looking really good right now, but so is Michael. Michael will continue to improve, and he won’t make it easy for Dressel.
What is his obsession with it being his last meet as a 19 year old?
maybe because he’s 19 years old going 1:57
I remember turning 20 and feeling a little pang about it. You are not a teenager anymore. Neil Young’s line is “You can’t be 20 on Sugar Mountain.” Probably more of a human thing than a swimmer thing. Big props to Michael and his coach as we see the talented and poised young man continuing to blossom!
Yeah why is he so excited about his birthday? Who does that? I hear Caeleb Dressel does a triple on his birthday every year.
Sorry! I meant it more in the sense that he’s not going up an age group so I didn’t know if there was any other significance in that sense.
I dunno, I think there’s a cultural significance to turning 20. No longer a teenager. Sounds like he’s embracing what everyone is saying – he’s no longer an age grouper, he’s getting into adult years now, and to retain his status, the comparison becomes more-and-more ‘everyone.’
Perhaps not the young phenom anymore.
He is the young adult phenom
