After taking a few weeks off of competition, the 12-year old phenom Michael Andrew got back in the water this weekend in Fort Collins, Colorado as his national barnstorming tour continued. This time, he was attacking the long course record book.
First, he took down the 50 fly record with a 26.22. That demolished by more than a second the old record set by Justin Lynch in 2009 at 27.36 (Lynch would go in in the summer of 2011 to break Michael Phelps’ 13-14 100 fly NAG Record).
This puts him in position to possibly attack the Chas Morton 100 fly yards record. That’s the big one that everyone wants to get because of how impressive it is and how long it has stood.
Later in the meet, he would break his own NAG mark in the 50 free with a 25.09. That betters his own mark, set in early February, of 25.50 (before that, Gregory Pelton had the mark from 2003 at 25.51).
When these records are ratified, it will bring his long course total to three. He ages up on April 18th, which means he will have two more big meets to try and complete his record run.
Big or not this young swimmer has the talent. He’s great in all strokes. He also hasn’t any problems of taper. He’s fast at every meet.
I would be super excited with a 12 yr old who could do those times in yards
That is a very slow pool. Extremely shallow. Maybe that doesn’t affect a 12 year old though. It sure didn’t seem to bother Missy Franklin at the girls high school state meet.
Good point oldsprinter. I’m pretty sure it doesn’t have warmup/warmdown either during long course meets. Not as big of an issue for a 12 year old as it would be for someone like Jason Lezak, but still a factor.
