On the second day of the Mare Nostrum tour in Barcelona, Michael Andrew broke the Barcelona meet record in the 50 back, swimming a time of 24.64. He takes .02 seconds off Japanese swimmer Junya Koga‘s record of 24.66 from 2014. He finished just over a tenth ahead of silver medalist Pieter Coetze (24.78) and also beat out bronze medalist Ryosuke Irie (24.94).

🥈PIETER COETZE 24,78
🥉RYOSUKE IRIE 24,94@nataciocat— CN Sant Andreu (@CNsantandreu) May 26, 2022
Andrew’s best time in the event is from 2019, when he swam a time of 24.39 at the 2019 Sette Colli Trophy Meet. He was faster today that he was at U.S. Trials in April, when he finished fifth with a time of 24.80.
Michael Andrew, Fastest 50 Back Swims:
- 24.39 – 2019 Sette Colli Trophy Meet
- 24.45 – 2019 Mare N0strum – Monaco
- 24.49 – 2018 FINA World Cup – Kazan/Doha
- 24.53 – 2019 Mare Nostrum – Canet/2019 Sette Colli Trophy Meet
- 24.58 – 2019 FINA World Championships
- 25.59 – 2018 US Nationals
- 24.60 – 2019 FINA World Cup – Kazan
- 24.62 – 2017 FINA World Junior Championships
- 24.64 – 2022 Mare Nostrum – Barcelona
As you can see Andrew has been faster in this event on eight different occasions, with many of his best times being clustered around smaller meets in 2018 and 2019 like the FINA World Cup and Mare Nostrum. His swim today is the fastest he’s been in the 50 back since 2019. That year, he finished fifth at World Championships in the event. This year, Andrew did not qualify to swim the 50 back at worlds. Instead, he will be swimming the 50/100 fly, 50/100 breast, and the 50 free.
Earlier this meet, Andrew won the 50 breast and took bronze in the 50 free.
Too bad he can’t break 58 in the 100 breast leg of the medley relay.
Since the Olympics I’ve thought the best thing for MA is Salo’s Program at Nova. He’d learn to sustain speed there
How often does he ever do practices with other swimmers? He has posted some on instagram with Hunter, and some Mexican national team swimmers.
I think what’s very impressive was the fact that he did 18 races last week and is now doing even more and just went a fast 24.6

End of discussion.
no one said he was better than those guys in a 50 back
This is an article about Andrew breaking a meet record, not about what he did at Trials, which is 100% irrelevant to the topic at hand.
End of discussion.
Absolutely fascinating. You had to do so much formatting to make what is objectively, a horrible post.
Hunter >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Michael
End of discussion
Yeah and Michael >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hunter in 50 Free, Fly and Breast
What’s your point?
Stick to the topic at hand.
Says the person who goes off topic…..
Such a special talent in swimming. No swimmer has his sprinting range and that’s a fact. All the haters can’t deny this.
His range is looking at the schedule and seeing which 50 is next
Since Michael Andrew won’t medal at the individual 100 meter events.
He will medal 100br at Worlds
I’m looking for that individual medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics for Michael Andrew. Still can’t find one.
Why is a swimmers’ worth, talent, or potential determined by their medal count? 4th place is nothing to be ashamed about. Yeah it sucks for him that he didn’t get a bronze but top 4 in the entire world? That’s special.
You’re asking why an athlete is Judged by the one thing that…we are supposed to judge them on?
Like I said, making it to the Olympic final is an achievement of its own
Don’t you have to win important medals to have the range….
I have, and will continue to have, the highest respect for MA, even in the face of continued ‘criticism’ from certain elements of the swimming community. He’s proven himself at Nationals, Tokyo Olympics, and soon – the world championships. He has earned everyone’s respect. Give it a rest!
You think a 24.6 is article worthy? It’s a training meet for him obviously. He is always going to get second guessed because of the way he does things
24.6 is as worthy of an article as all the random college commits on here, if swimswam isn’t reporting on a new record then idk what they would report on
., , , , , AND THAT IS NOT A SIN – it’s just a difference!
Are you a practicing Christian ?
Magic man is not impressed
