Another week, another record for 12-year old superstar Michael Andrew. During Saturday’s prelims at the Jenks, Oklahoma Sectional meet, Andrew smashed his own National Age Group Record in the 50 free. This meet is being swum in long course as a precursor to this summer’s Olympic Trials.
In the morning heats of the 50, he swam a 25.15 to make his way into the Bonus Final at the meet – making him the youngest swimmer in the final by four years (he was actually the youngest swimmer in the race period). His previous record was set three weeks ago by Andrew at 25.50, which at the time shaved only .01 of Greg Pelton’s old mark from 2003.
Earlier in this meet, he edged closer to the 100 breaststroke mark as well. He swam a 2:10.05 in the individual race, but later time trialed a 1:09.95. Later in Saturday’s prelims session, Andrew swam a 2:18.38, which is the 4th-best time in 11-12 history in the US.
