Michael Andrew shocked us all with his swim in the 200 IM at the the Richmond Pro Swim dropping a 1:57.49. What some may not know is that heading into the meet, he’s been experimenting with the Ketogenic Diet. Eliminating carbs from your diet sounds brutal, but Michael does do things differently. It’ll be interesting to see how the diet works after the summer is over.
Michael swam the 200 IM in Richmond to prep for the event at the FINA Champions Series. In Guangzhou, China, however, it was his 3rd event of the session, and though he still collected $5k in prize money, he turned in a slow 2:04. I’m hoping he can turn it around at the FINA Champions Series in Indianapolis, May 31-June 1st, after getting the Guangzhou experience under his belt.
Predictions.
If Michael focuses on a fast 200 IM in Indy, what do you think he can go? I would love see Michael shave a few tenths, going 1:57.1-2, maybe even a 1:56.9. But who cares what I think… What do you think?

Remarkable Michael Andrew’s pioneering face of pro swimming.
Thankyou Swim Swam and Mel Stewart for putting together the much needed media base camp as this sport expands.
Are the Troy torture plan old school ways viable down the road?
Andrew is one humble fun guy and hats off bro.
Cody Miller is Swim Swam’s ambassador!
Long live Cherry Jello!
He uses UCan for carbs! So not pure Keto.
He does a rotation Keto diet, not pure one. Eats carbs on weekends. Right now this is his new sponsor.
correct!
Whatever he’s eating he needs to take a gulp at 51 meters
It’s 11.30 & I have had 3 coffees. I’m on a caffogenic diet .
Give me a bag o Ruffles and a Pepsi any day.
Stupid…keto is fine for endurance and strength and power…not good for HIIT.
Says…Anonymous.
Bc we all know exactly who you are based of your name…?
Cite some evidence to your claims about “not good for HIIT,” poolboy.
Looks like the Michael Andrew plan this year is to scoop up as much money as possible as a pro swimmer.
His short workouts probably make it easier to get in the training while pursuing his loaded competition schedule.
At the Olympic Trials, the 50 free semis are the same night as the 200 IM final. I wonder how the two events fit into his plans.
50 free semis are on June 27th. 200 IM final is on June 26th. No overlap. Full schedule is here:

I see the changes. Michael has a top time in the 200 IM, but it’s a taxing event for him physically.
The 50 free is his baby. Would he be risking his best 50 free by trying to swim the 200 IM the day before?
That’s a good question. His multi-event-sessions have been hit-and-miss in season, though they seem to be fine at the end of the season. He does have some real choices to make – because there’s no conceivable way that he makes the Olympic team in all of the events for which the team is in reach with semi-finals (or, who knows, maybe I’m wrong and he will). There hasn’t yet been much of a discernible drop-off day-after-day, though; the dropoff we sometimes see is within a session.
To me, the bigger potential conflict is the 100 fly final and the 50 free semi-final, though his main rival Caeleb Dressel will have the same. The good news is that both should be… Read more »
The WCs will be a big meet in the evolution of Michael Andrew because of the extra swims and the extra pressure and competition.
Team Michael vs.Team Dressel is a quite a match-up for the gold medals.
With the 100 fly final two events before the 50 free semi final (and one of the in between events is the women’s 800 free final), he should be ok–unless we suddenly see a lot more folks getting down into the 21.5 range…
I’m going to throw out there what no one ever mentions. MA is tough and not afraid to put his body on the line. He’s male version of Hosszu, just shorter distances. And before anyone says, what’s the big deal, it’s just a bunch of 50’s, I say try it. There’s a reason no one else is doing it, because it’s hard.
Let’s see how he does in a format with semifinals and finals. He’s not battle-tested in that format yet.
Except for that World championship he won with semis in the 100 IM in 2016. Anyone who can beat Dressel head to head in multiple events is going to have no trouble with semis.
People act like him scooping up as much money as he can as a pro is a bad thing. He should go get his while he can.
