Michael Andrew Scratches 200 IM Final for Tonight

2016 U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS

The start lists for tonight’s finals are up, and Michael Andrew of Indie Swimming has scratched the final of the men’s 200 IM, after tying the World Junior Record in the event last night.

Andrew is slated to swim the 50 free and the 100 fly this morning. He is the 14th seed in the 50 free and the 12th seed in the 100 fly.

With Andrew’s scratch, Austin Surhoff of North Baltimore Aquatic Club slides into the final. Surhoff’s time from last night was a 1:59.89, which puts him in the race for fourth place. Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps have the Olympic spots on lockdown, and, after last night, David Nolan sits in a solid third place, after clocking 1:58.16 yesterday.

In the 100 breaststroke, Andrew has set a new national age group record for every one of his past five swims, including his performances at the Omaha Cup.

He should scratch his remaining events and get ready to swim for South Africa in Rio. Is he still eligible to compete for South Africa?

The dude is an American, and a proud one at that. He will swim for Team USA at worlds next year. At his rate of progression, Rio is just 6 months too early for him.

This is about right. He is part of the future of USA swimming.

I wonder what his sponsors have to say about him passing on the chance to race Phelps and Lochte on primetime television…can’t think of a better opportunity to get exposure

I saw him swim in the semifinal last night taking it out with Lochte, and couldn´t help but notice how UGLY his strokes look. You see Ryan swimming efforletlessly and flawless, with amazing turns and underwaters. But, I looked at lane 2 and saw a choppy and forced looking stroke swimming pretty fast. Just thought it was something worth sharing.

Seems strange of him to scratch…he certainly won’t make the team in any of the three events, so I would think it would be a good idea to swim as many events as possible. And if he were to scratch one, the 200IM seems to be a strange choice given that it is probably his strongest of the three

I would not have advised him to scratch. He’s actually better at the 200 IM than the 50 free or 100 fly. I was hoping to see him pop 1:58. We’ll have to wait…

He’s right on 52 and 21 so may as well see what he can do in those and swim the 200 IM more at juniors

“Oh, sure, he’s good in yards, but let’s see what he does in meters!”
“Well, yeah, he can swim short course, but what about long course?”
“Sheesh! Anyone can do 50’s, what about 100’s and 200’s? That’s where he’ll really show if he has it!”

Well, say all you Michael Andrew bashers, now? Not sure what more he’d need to do at this point. I was a fan before and have been impressed with how well he’s performed, thus far. Best of luck!

hope the Andrews let Surhoff know that last night and not this morning. Pretty sure he was done for the week (and possibly for good, although I have no knowledge of that) and if I were him and thought I was done, I would have had a pretty fun night last night…
