Michael Andrew Wins His First World Championship Gold

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

MEN’S 100 IM FINALS

  • 2014 World Champion: Markus Diebler (GER), 50.66
  • World Record: Vlad Morozov (RUS), 50.30, 2016
  • Championship Record: Markus Diebler (GER), 50.66, 2014

GOLD: Michael Andrew, USA, 51.84

SILVER: Daiya Seto, JPN, 52.01

BRONZE: Shinri Shioura, JPN, 52.17

As is evident with some of the stunning performances at Winter Juniors, the Americans are in good hands moving forward with a strong group of 18&under swimmers who look to enter the next wave in American swimming, and leading that charge is newly minted world champion Michael Andrew.

Tonight, Andrew made the transition from national age group and world junior records to a world champion by defeating 100m IM world record holder Vlad Morozov in the men’s 100m IM at the 2016 Short Course World Championships in Windsor. Andrew pushed over the last 10-meters to emerge victorious in a time of 51.84.

Andrew led the race at the 50 wall and didn’t let a charging Daiya Seto catch him. Seto touched in for second just 0.17 seconds behind in 52.01. Shinri Shioura, also of Japan, was third in 52.17 to take the bronze.

With that win, Michael Andrew is officially the youngest ever male world champion in the 100m IM.

Wow! I’ve been wondering for a long time if the hype around MA would materialize into success at the highest levels. Now we have our answer: he’s unquestionably world class. The accomplishment is even more impressive at such a young age and with so much pressure. Congrats, Michael!

Very happy for Michael. He is a world champion. Bet in the world – I don’t care what the event is, only few can claim that. Pople that disparage him are the same ones that suffer from penis problem and that claim that Clark Smith is a choker, after winning NCAA and Olympics.

I don’t still understand why no race is posted on youtube.
We have some parts of the race here with an interview.

Anyway 100 IM or not, SCM or not, simply winning a world title at 17 on the men’s side is just a great accomplishment. No need of always being negative.

Congrats to Michael Andrew. I never expected to see him win an individual gold this week. Especially after a very tough first day of competition. I’m impressed to see how he rebounded. He held off Seto on freestyle. Impressive.
On paper Vlad Morozov couldn’t lose that race considering the huge margin he had. But he swam a lot in world cups and also a lot since the start of the week. He pays the price. Always very strange to see such schedule choices. But good for MA.
The 100 IM is the best event in short course for MA with the 50 breast and 100 breast.
He struggles above 100 meters. Very good versatility. Perfect event.

He need some to start narrowing his event list. 100 breast and 200 Im seem to be his best events

I hope those disparaging his world title are at least consistent and also disparage the 50’s of strokes, mixed relays, the 800 for men and the 1500 for women. Actually while we’re at it why not just bemoan anyone swimming anything other than Olympic events in a long course pool.

Huge accomplishment by MA, but what happened to Vlad? This was his event to lose, and after how consistently he was going 50. during the world cup series I thought he would walk away with it.

He had the 200 free relay about 5 minutes right before and has been swimming a lot this meet.
