The 2nd day of the La Mirada Sectional Championships built upon the success of the first day with even more speed shown. Even with a decidedly less-collegiate flavor than most of this weekend’s sectional championships, this meet is still proving to be the fastest of them on a busy weekend for club swimming.
18-year old Taylor Ault, who is in her last summer home before heading east to swim at Florida, opened the day up with a win in the 200 free in 2:01.04. That’s the third-best time of her career.
One race later, Michael Lincoln from PASA kept the momentum going with a 1:50.87 to win the men’s 200 free. That’s nearly a 3-second time drop for him, improving upon his previous best from the PSS – Santa Clara meet in early June. Lincoln, who is heading to Brown this fall, is now the 10th-fastest American 18 & under of 2017 in the event.
Other Day 2 Winners:
- Kenisha Liu won a nailbiter of a 400 IM, finishing in 4:50.65. That was just .05 seconds better than runner-up Katie Glavinovich, who took 2nd in 4:50.70. While Liu is a superior breaststroker to Glavinovich, and used that to build a big lead, Glavinovich was 4 seconds better on the closing freestyle leg to very nearly close the gap.
- Kevin Vargas won the men’s 400 IM in 4:27.11. He’s just 16, and that makes him the 4th-best 16 & under in the country in that event so far this year. The aforementioned Lincoln took 2nd in 4:27.91
- 16-year old Alexandra Crisera from Beach Cities Swimming won the women’ss 100 backstroke in 1:03.28, just out-touching runner-up Emily Trieu from Brea Aquatics (1:03.52)
- 19-year old Christopher Staka, who swims at Alabama collegiately, won the men’s 100 back in 55.19. That moves him into the world’s top 100 in the event this season.
- A group of unattached PASA swimmers won the women’s 400 free relay in 3:52.02, which included a 56.93 from Brooke Schaffer on the 3rd leg. Brea Aquatics took 2nd in 3:52.29, with anchor Kenish Liu (56.25 split) almost running down PASA after hitting the water with a nearly two second deficit to make up.
