Michael Phelps on Day 3: I felt something I’ve never felt before (Video Interview)

Video produced by Coleman Hodges.

Reported by Anne Lepesant.

We were all focused on the Phelps-Lochte showdown in the 200 IM, but where it was really happening was in the 100 free. Josh Schneider of New York Athletic Club, the 50 free champion, was the first to turn at the halfway mark, but the entire race would play out over the second half.

Four competitors were under 24 at the 50; four were over. And the last of them were Lochte and Phelps. As they pulled even with the leaders over the second half, it quickly became anyone’s race. And then came the touch. When the waves settled it was Phelps in 49.72; Lochte in 49.77. Dwyer had a strong back half as well, and finished third in 50.22.

The rest of the final finished with a half-second of each other. Emmanuel Vanluchene(50.22), Renzo Tjon A Joe (50.26), Schneider (50.34), Matt Grevers of Tucson Ford (50.73), and Tim Phillips of SwimMAC (50.73).

Off topic but for those who understand French (you can also use Google translate of course), here’s an article from the Eurosport website about the autobiography of Amaury Leveaux.

He writes that some French swimmers use cocaine as a festive product or as a doping product. 😆
He writes that he has already seen a French people’s favorite handsome boy (Camille Lacourt?) using cocaine between the breasts of a press attaché in the evening during the London olympic games. 😆
He says that Marseille swimmers (Lacourt, Manaudou, Gilot, Perez Dortona….) are big-headed. 😆
He writes very nice things about the French federation talking about dinosaurs who are there only… Read more »

OMG! That’s the way to sell books, but it’s also the way to “sell out” his “friends” in the French swimming community! I would be surprised if there wasn’t some kind of inquiry which might affect the morale of some of the French swimmers!

I think this would be MP’s thought’s on Day 4, correct? (Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat).

Being very new as a spectator, if anyone is interested in sharing their thoughts: might he be better off doubling on races when possible? I just remember in 2012 watching him jump from the 200IM into the warm-up pool and then back for the 100fly semi-finals, where he threw down a much better time than he did the next day. Then at Nationals on the last day he had very little room between the 200IM and the 4×100 relay medley, where he produced another solid swim. I guess that would be hard to make happen consistently, but if someone has trained for a kind… Read more »

There may be something to it…

He may be able to replicate it with some harder (but shorter) warmup swimming.

No, but that’s still a team that has the potential to go sub-3:10 in Rio. I’m assuming that while most of these guys aren’t going to be faster in 2016 than in 2012, they shouldn’t much slower, either.

Still have the suspenders and tie, Mel? Gotta love that late 80s / early 90s fashion. 🙂

Re: Mel: Not just 1:55.6, but 1:55.6 in briefs. Not a lot of people can say that.

I remember watching this video on NBC and watching Mel cry on the medal podium like it was yesterday! Barcelona was the best Olympics ever! Ah, the good old days…

Nice swim, Mel… Every time I see a video of Gross I can’t help but think of how fast he’d have gone of he could 1) streamline, 2) dolphin kick and 3) breakout… He is absolutely atrocious on the walls. It’s annoyed me so much for so long that my screen name was almost “Gross Underwaters”.
