Michigan HS State Champion Angus MacDonald Commits To Notre Dame (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Angus MacDonald has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Notre Dame. MacDonald is currently a junior at Wylie E. Groves High School, located in Beverly Hills, Michigan.

He shared his reasons for choosing Notre Dame with SwimSwam:

“I chose Notre Dame for it’s beautiful campus and it’s outstanding academic program.”

MacDonald, who swims year-round with the Birmingham Blue Dolphins, is a breaststroke and IM specialist. Earlier this month at the Michigan High School State Championship, MacDonald won the state title in the 100 breast with a personal best time of 55.82 in prelims. He also earned runner-up in the 200 IM, posting a best time of 1:50.18. His 100 breast was a massive improvement from where he was a year ago, with this swim being two seconds faster than he was at this same meet in 2022.

He also hit a number of best times this past long course season. At the Cleveland Speedo Sectionals, MacDonald placed as high as 4th in the 200m breast and 400m IM. In the 200m breast, he dropped nearly two seconds to post a 2:19.62, while in the 400m IM he improved by a few tenths to record a 4:32.08. He also dropped over a second in the 100m breast and 200m IM  for 8th (1:05.16) and 11th (2:08.46), respectively.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 breast – 26.28
  • 100 breast – 55.82
  • 200 breast – 2:02.29
  • 200 IM – 1:50.18
  • 400 IM – 3:57.52

The Fighting Irish recently finished 5th out of 12 teams at the 2023 ACC Championships. The breaststroke events were on the weaker side for Notre Dame this year, as they tallied only 17 points in the 100 breast and 29 points in the 200 breast. It took a 54.26 and 1:59.20 to advance to finals in the breaststroke races, meaning MacDonald is currently over a second outside of scoring range in both.

Tyler Christianson was the team’s top performer in the 200 breaststroke at conference with a 13th place finish (1:55.24), while Sean Faikish was just behind him at 15th (1:56.31). In the 100, Christianson led the way again finishing in 10th (53.05), and was the only finalist in the event. Christianson and Faikish only have a year remaining on campus, meaning Notre Dame will be looking to fill that gap when MacDonald arrives.

MacDonald joins Charlie Tracy, Jack Sullivan, and Patrick Branon in Notre Dame’s class of 2024. Branon and Tracy are distance freestyle and IM focused, while Sullivan is the lone sprinter of the group so far.
