Emily Kopas, Allie Davis Named Big Ten Swimmers of the Week

Two Michigan swimmers earned Big Ten weekly honors, as Emily Kopas was named Big Ten women’s swimmer of the week along with Purdue’s Allie Davis, and Kopas’ teammate Siobhain Haughey was named freshman of the week. Diver of the week went to Minnesota’s Yu Zhou. Davis won 3 events at the FIU Sprint Classic: the 200 free (1:47.75), 500 free (4:50.54), and 100 free (51.12). Kopas won the 50 meter breast (32.04) and 100 meter breast (1:10.57) at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic. Haughey won the 100 free (55.86) and 200 IM (2:14.64) at that meet.

Swimmers of the Week
Emily Kopas, Michigan

So. – Davie, Fla. – University School

  • Recorded a trio of first-place finishes in the 50-meter breaststroke (32.04), 100-meter breaststroke (1:10.57) and 200-meter medley relay (1:54.99) at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic to lead Michigan to a first-place finish
  • Time in the 100-meter breaststroke converts to an NCAA provisional qualifying mark, per NCAA conversion standards
  • Set a new meet record in the 50-meter breaststroke
  • Earns her first career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award

Allie Davis, Purdue

Sr. – Santa Rosa, Calif. – Windsor

  • Tallied three first-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.75), 500-yard freestyle (4:50.54) and 100-yard freestyle (51.12), and added second- and third-place marks in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.29) and 50-yard freestyle (24.14), respectively, en route to a Purdue championship at the Florida International Sprint Invitational
  • Time in the 200-yard freestyle is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark
  • Established a pair of pool records in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns her second career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award
  • Last Purdue Swimmer of the Week: Allie Davis (Nov. 11, 2015)

 

Diver of the Week

Yu Zhou, Minnesota

Jr. – Wuhan, China – Beijing College of Sports

  • Won the one-meter event with a score of 309.60 and placed second on three-meter with a score of 307.90 at the University of Georgia Invitational
  • Scores in both events are NCAA Zone qualifying marks
  • Earns her ninth career Diver of the Week honor
  • Last Minnesota Diver of the Week: Yu Zhou (Nov. 25, 2015)

 

Freshman of the Week
Siobhain Haughey, Michigan

Hong Kong – St. Paul’s Secondary School

  • Collected a trio of first-place finishes in the 100-meter freestyle (55.86), 200-meter individual medley (2:14.64) and 200-meter freestyle relay (1:44.16) en route to Michigan’s first-place team finish at the Orange Bowl Swim Classic
  • Times in the 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter individual medley convert to NCAA provisional qualifying times, per NCAA conversion standards
  • Set new meet records in the 200-meter individual medley and 200-meter freestyle relay
  • Earns her third career Freshman of the Week honor
  • Last Michigan Freshman of the Week: Siobhain Haughey (Dec. 9, 2015)
