U.S. National Team member and pre-race dancing queen Sierra Schmidt has given her verbal commitment to the University of Michigan. Schmidt is our #2 recruit in the high school class of 2017.
“I am so grateful to have this opportunity and I want to thank everyone that helped me along the way to make this decision. I am incredibly excited about this next step in my life as well as working with world class coaches, a supportive and fun team, and learning at a superb academic university. Also looking forward to dancing in Ann Arbor for four years! GO BLUE!”
Schmidt is a stellar distance freestyler. She first made a name for herself sweeping the 400-800-1500 at 2014 Summer Juniors, then went on to represent the U.S. at Junior Pan Pacs that summer, where she won the 800 and 1500. The next summer Schmidt was wearing red white and blue for the U.S. at 2015 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and won the 800 at Pan Ams.. This summer she won the 400m free and 1500m free and was fourth in the 800m free at U.S. Open.
Over the last 12 months Schmidt has been improving her 200 and 400 IMs, as well as back and fly events. Her top times include:
SCY | LCM | |
1650/1500 free | 15:57.89 | 16:12.84 |
1000/800 free | 9:33.99 | 8:27.54 |
500/400 free | 4:38.47 | 4:07.47 |
200 free | 1:47.63 | 2:01.64 |
200 fly | 1:58.19 | 2:12.80 |
400 IM | 4:11.64 | 2:19.88 |
200 IM | 2:02.67 | 4:49.12 |
Schmidt will make an immediate impact for the Wolverines; she is already within scoring range for NCAAs in the 500 and 1650 frees, and is moving quickly up the ranks in the 400 IM.
Schmidt will join the University of Michigan’s class of 2021 with fellow commits Alex Hughes, Alexis Margett, Daria Pyshnenko, and Emma Cleason.

I’m Kate Krolikowski’s grandma and watched you at the trials in Omaha. LOVE YOUR STYLE! And your dancing. So fun. And you’re a great swimmer. Hope to meet you when we come to Ann Arbor.
I’m Sierra Schmidt’s father and we are looking forward to sharing in the excitement of The University of Michigan swimming with you, the other recruits from this year, and the existing members of the team. Thank you for the complement. GO BLUE!
This young woman is obviously a very bright and perceptive person who also happens to be a world class athlete. She must be very bright…..she chose The University of Michigan. Go Blue!
Is she Allisons sister?
NO, she isn’t her sister. Sierra’s parents are Michigan grads I think which probably helped with her decision.
Uberfan – unrelated. Spelled differently – Schmitt versus Schmidt.
Interesting that the top two recruits for the women this year are both distance swimmers. I feel like it’s typically a really versatile sprinter or IMer due to relay contributions. Refreshing to see a little shakeup at the top.
What a great catch for the Wolverines!
Congrats Sierra-Michigan is lucky to have you!
Great swimmer. Great Heart. Hard Worker. So Proud of you Sierra Go Blue!
