For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Stephanie Balduccini from São Paulo, Brazil, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Michigan’s class of 2027.
“I am SO excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of Michigan in the class of 2023! I wanted to thank my coach, family, friends, club and everyone involved in making this possible. Go blue💙〽️”
Balduccini became the youngest Brazilian swimmer to compete at the Olympics in 41 years when she swam at the Tokyo 2020 Games on the women’s 4×100 free relay. Balduccini split 54.06 on the anchor, the fastest split of the 12th-place Brazilian quartet. She qualified for Tokyo by dropping more than 3 seconds in the 100 free to finish 3rd (55.06) at Brazil’s Olympic Trials in April.
In August, she won the SCM 100 free (53.71) at the 2021 Jose Finkel Trophy, Brazil’s national championship meet. Her time cleared the qualifying standard for Short Course Worlds.
In November, Balduccini won a pair of individual gold medals at the inaugural Junior Pan American Games, helping Brazil win the overall medal table. She notched PBs in both events, winning the 50 free in 25.47 and the 100 free in 54.63. In December, she lowered her PB in the 100 free to 54.53 at the Brazilian Junior Summer Championships, the Julio de Lamare Trophy. There, she won 7 of her 9 events.
With another year and a half to go before she will suit up for the Wolverines, Balduccini already has times that, when converted to SCY, are capable of scoring at Big Ten Championships in the A finals of the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly and the B finals of the 200 free, 500 free, and 200 IM. She will be a much-appreciation addition in Ann Arbor in the fall of 2023, after the graduation of Maggie MacNeil this spring. Balduccini’s best 100 free time would have placed her second to MacNeil at the 2021 B1G Championships.

Probably nice that U of M has a Brazilian assistant coach.
Huge score for Michigan!
Stephanie is a very talented and educated young lady.
Crazy that she dropped 3 seconds at trials. Shows that she has some massive potential at big meets for possible big drops
Big pickup! Was curious where she would end up.
Great Add! Go Blue!
Emelie Fast, another Olympian in the class of 23, has committed to Tennessee via Instagram.
Cool?
