On Day 2 of the SMU Women’s Classic, the Michigan Wolverines closed out the meet with an extremely close win over the Louisville Cardinals, with the 2 teams separated by just 1 point. All-Americans Rose Bi and Mallory Comerford battled it out for their teams in the 500 free, finishing within hundredths of each other. At the touch, it was Michigan’s Bi who got her hand on the wall first in 4:37.62, just ahead of Louisville’s Comerford (4:37.64).

Later in the session, Comerford returned to the pool for the 100 free, posting the only sub-48 time of the field. Her winning time of 47.89 was a new personal best, lowering her 48.31 from last season’s ACC Championship meet.

Comerford’s teammate Andee Cottrell completed her sweep of the breaststroke events at this meet, this time taking 1st place in the 200 breast. Cottrell was neck-and-neck with USC’s Kirsten Vose as they turned for the final 50, but made a final 50 charge to win the race in 2:08.74 to Vose’s 2:08.94.

USC freshman Louise Hansson continued to impress, winning the 200 IM by over 3 seconds. Hansson jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, touching the wall in 1:55.95.

These are excellent times for early season. Did the team rest?

I was on deck and they did not look rested. This is a great, and VERY competitive, format that often produces very good early season times as indicated by the meet records. They take about 5 minutes between each event cycle (One heat of Relays and an A/B final). Each session lasts about 2 hours and 15 minutes including about 30 minutes of diving halfway through. Plus, they swam the interior 6 lanes which allowed for ample open water and fast swims on the outside.

IMO, for many swimmers, coming off a very demanding Olympic Trials/Olympic Games training cycle, it is pretty common to have some great early season swimming and then some very fast times at many Conference… Read more »

They may not have looked rested, but the times say otherwise. Teams in heavy training don’t usually have girls swimming lifetime best times

Miss Comerford is a name to remember for the next US 4X200 free relay teams at worlds and in Tokyo 2020.
She has improved a lot in the last few months.

And in the 400 free relay, I feel like in Long course she’s just as well equipped for a 100 free

Wow, Comerford is still improving at a pretty good clip. Impressive.

Looks like MI won because of their diver. She was the high pt diver of the meet & only a freshman. Seems silly that the swimmers were suited up for this 2nd meet of season??

Seems silly to me as well. We’ll see later on if any of them improve on these times as many were personal bests and even a school record or two was set.
