The No. 8 University of Michigan water polo team will travel to Bloomington, Ind. on Saturday (Apr. 2) to start its conference season against No. 15 Indiana at 11 a.m. ET.
The Teams
- No. 8 Michigan (19-6) – played 23 of 25 nonconference games against ranked teams
- No. 15 Indiana (15-5) – undefeated at home with a 4-0 record
THINGS TO KNOW
- Michigan leads the all-time series with a 34-16-1 record, but Indiana has won six of the last seven meetings.
- All three games in 2015 were decided by one goal with two of those coming in overtime. Indiana won the first time, 9-8, in Bloomington. Michigan won 13-12 in double overtime at home and then Indiana won 9-8 in overtime during the CWPA Championships.
- In the 51 meetings between the two schools there have been 13 overtime games, including a four overtime 8-7 Michigan victory in 2002 at the CWPA Championships. There have been 22 battles decided by one goal.
- Senior Ali Thomason scored 12 goals and had three assists in three games against Indiana in 2015. Six of her goals came in the win at Canham.
- In his first season at Michigan, Dr. Marcelo Leonardi led the Wolverines to an 8-1 record in CWPA action with the only loss coming to Princeton, 9-7.
- U-M has played 23 of its 25 games against ranked teams this season, going 17-6 in those contests. The Wolverines are 5-6 against top-10 teams and earned just the second top-five victory in school history, beating No. 3 Cal at the UCI Invitational.
- Thomason ranks among the Michigan career leaders in goals (5th), points (7th) and steals (5th). She is six points away from tying Sheetal Narsai for sixth (265).
- Sophomore Caroline Anderson has reached 50 assists for the second straight season to break both the freshman (56) and sophomore (50) assist records. She has just two of the three 50-assist seasons at Michigan. She is three assists shy of passing the founder of the team’s pen pal program Mary Chatigny for 8th on the career list.
- Junior Allison Skaggs is four goals shy of reaching 100 for her career.
